Asus Rampage III Extreme PCI-E slots and power cables , need some Advice

Hey ..
First this is my Motherboard ..

I know my questions might be silly .. i'm kinda clueless when it come to hardware ..
I have a Rampage 3 Extreme and and i just got a new Asus GTX 780 ( its the best available in my country sorry to disappoint you ) and tomorrow i'm going to re build my PC and install a new GPU and H105 CPU cooler so i thought i ask you couple of questions .


About the PCI-E slots ..

The first PCI Express x16 slot works at x16 if the second slot is empty. If there is a video card on the second slot, both the first and the second slot will work at x8. The third and fourth PCI Express x16 slots work the same way: the third one works at x16 or x8, depending whether the fourth slot is empty or not. So if you have two video cards it is really important to use the first and the third (and not the second) PCI Express x16 slots in order to get the best performance possible. Using the manufacturer nomenclature, this motherboard supports the following configurations: x16; x16/x16; x16/x8/x8 or x8/x8/x8/x8. The slots are compatible with SLI and CrossFireX arrays.

I really don't understand a thing ..
i only want to install 1 GPU
my old GPU is already on the third slot ( from right to left ) ..
is that a x16 slot or not ? is it a must to install it on the first slot ?

what is this adapter for ? i always have it plugged in but ive seen some people not using it at all, is it important ?

Put the GPU in the PCI-E closest to the CPU 😉 the molex plug in is for additional power in the event of extreme OCing or multi-card GPU SLI, most all don't need it

oh alright, My CPU is i7 960, and i'm planing to do some OC from 3200 - 4000ghz .. in that case do i need the extra molex ? and what if my card didn't fit in the first slot what to do then ?

These are explained in the manual .... Son No. 2 has same board.

Most any GPU should be fine in slot one, which is the recommended slot, believe for dual SLI they say PCI'e slots 1-3 for dual x16, then 1-3-4 for tri which drops to x16-x8-x8 or quad is straight x8, don't think you'll need the molex
