I have an asus rog g20 connected by hdmi to a samsung monitor which then hooks up to a smaller dell monitor by a 15pin monitor cable. The smaller dell monitor is black. The dell monitor can detect when it is plugged into the other one because instead of showing a box it just turns black.

Solution
You can't "daisy chain" monitors like that.

The 15-pin D-Sub connector on the back of the Samsung monitor is an input port, not an output port, so how do you expect it to send a video signal to the Dell monitor? It isn't gonna happen.

Both monitors must be connected to the computer's GPU (if it supports two monitors).
If the GPU doesn't support two monitors, you'll have to buy a GPU which does.

If you got the ROG G20 model from Microcenter with a GTX 960 and i7, it does support two monitors (I game on one and use the other for my stream so definitely can confirm); just plug the second into HMDI.

Sorry, new and I saw that but figured also for future readers looking for the answer it could help. No desperation this time!
