Hi all,

TL/DR: Pics linked below, what is your opinion of the backlight bleed? Would you have this product refunded/replaced?

The whole story:

Just looking for some opinions to help me make an informed decision regarding my ASUS ROG GL502VS-DB71. Have been out of the high-end scene for some years now, but recently decided to upgrade. I travel regularly for work so mobility is extremely important to me. Got this laptop off Newegg as an open-box for $1,350, which I thought was a pretty fantastic price for a 1070 machine.

Spent a few days installing games, benchmarking, reading reviews, etc. I LOVED (almost) everything about this laptop. But then one night I was playing the Resident Evil 7 demo, and I was distracted during dark scenes by this bright splotch of yellow light on the top-right corner of my screen. I started researching the issue and found out all about "backlight bleeding" on these LCD/IPS displays. I used lightbleedtest.com to test and sure enough I see a few areas impacted on my screen. The top-right is by far the worst and the only one that really bothers me during normal usage. It probably doesn't help that I prefer to use max brightness, which apparently isn't very common, but I really don't like a dark screen.

Anyway, please see pictures below from a couple different distances. Max brightness in a dark room with normal setting on my iPhone 6 camera. I'm curious what everyone else thinks? Obviously this camera phone overexposes the image, but it still seems quite bad from all the comparison shots I've seen in the last few days. Welcome additional opinions.

Right now these are the options I'm considering:

1. Just live with it. I got a great price for the hardware and the laptop is in great condition otherwise. I'm definitely a perfectionist, however, and I want this to laptop to last me at least a few years, and this light bleed is really bothering me now…
2. Return to Newegg. I called today and they are out of this model, so I would not be able to receive a replacement, but I can get a full refund until mid-February and they will even pay return shipping. With this option, however, I will lose out on the open-box deal and I doubt I can get another beefy machine like this at that price point anymore.
3. RMA to ASUS. I also called them today and they are similarly willing to pay shipping both ways. They stated that they will assess the machine and, if warranted, will repair and ship it back in ~ 3 business days + shipping time both ways. That being said, I have read HORRIBLE things on this forum and others regarding ASUS RMA service. I am afraid I will be risking damage to the laptop, or alternately that they will judge my issue "within quality standards" and actually do nothing, thus leaving me without the laptop for a few weeks for no good reason at all.
4. If I act quickly, I MAY have time to send the product back to ASUS, see if I'm happy with their fix, and if not still have time left to return it to Newegg while it's under their warranty. But if ASUS takes longer than their average cycle time (which I have also seen occur to other folks here), then I may miss out on my "get out of jail free" card with Newegg.

At this point I am probably leaning most towards option #4, but like I said, I am a little concerned that the backlight bleed isn't as bad as I'm making it out to be. Like maybe I'm just being overly sensitive and this level of brightness is just to be expected with my display?

Thanks in advance for all your help. Please let me know if there are any questions.

Most peeps confuse "Backlight Bleed" with "IPS Glow". All IPS screens experience IPS Glow, nature of the beast kinds thing. In a perfect IPS screen, I noticed years ago for example that playing Diablo when you are in the (dark) caves, it was much harder to see approaching baddies because their torchlight was 'lost" in the IPS glow.

What you are seeing would appear to be a combination of both however turning brightness or gamma up too high will greatly exaggerate the condition. I'd suggest doing a screen calibration using the built in Windows utility paying specific attention to gamma and contrast

Thanks, Jack.

I did try the screen calibration last night. I was able to find a decent setting with much lower brightness (40%), but with adjusted contrast and gamma such that the screen still looked pretty good. Although the bleed was reduced, it was still visible regardless. Overall I still prefer the higher brightness for regular use, I just think the colors look much better that way.

This is an image with 40% brightness pulled pretty far back from the screen: https://s29.postimg.org/fpncrltxz/40percent.jpg

I also did some research last night and it looks like the deal I got really was pretty good. Most prices out there right now would mean me paying $250+ MORE to DOWNGRADE to a 1060. So that doesn't look like an option either. At this point I think the only reasonable choice is probably to RMA to ASUS. I just hope it doesn't come back in even worse condition...

By the way, I am familiar with "IPS glow" as well, and I think I have some of that, especially on the bottom of the screen. But to the best of my understanding at this point, the top-left and especially top-right corners are definitely suffering from backlight bleed.

Thanks again for your reply. So the question then is, from your knowledge, is the bleed you see on my screen greater than you would expect to see on a normal IPS? Does it seem to warrant RMA? Recognize this is subjective, but was just trying to gather opinions.
