Hello, I am considering this motherboard for use with the i7-8700K. Is it a good one?

I am looking for compatible RAM (32GB/64GB). I cannot find RAM over 16GB listed in this QVL. How come? I asked ASUS chat agent. He told me to just get 2 kits to make it 32GB and 4 kits to make it 64GB. Doesn't that cause potential issues due to different bins? I also asked him if G.Skill RAM 3200 32GB and 64GB kits are compatible with this motherboard. At first he said yes and later he said that if they are not listed in QVL, then no. When I questioned him again, he changed his words to compatible means running at lower speed. Any recommendation?

Here is a list that details motherboard compatibility with Ubuntu linux compatibility.

In other words, he doesn't really know. Sadly, not much else anyone can tell you. They tested what they tested.

Just buy the DDR4 kit you want and give it a try. Worst case you have to return it.

There is some truth to mixing memory kits, but memory purchased at the same time isn't that risky. Chances of getting memory from two batches is pretty small.

Who knows perhaps there wasn't 32 or 64 GB matched sets available when the list was made.

The G.Skill RAM Configurator does list both 32 and 64 GB matched sets for your specific motherboard. The specs for the motherboard also list it.

4 x DIMM, Max. 64GB, DDR4 4000(O.C.)/3866(O.C.)/3733(O.C.)/3600(O.C.)/3466(O.C.)/3400(O.C.)/3333(O.C.)/3300(O.C.)/3200(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666/2400/2133 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

Yes, G.Skill RAM Configurator does list that so it should be good to go?

In the middle of the chat, that ASUS guy said the kits are not compatible but later after I pressed him on wat he said, he mentioned that they are compatible only when running at slower speed. Then, I asked if 3200 will work as he said the kits are compatible at the beginning, he said it will require OCing. When I asked how to OCing, he had no comment. Strange. Usually ASUS tech support are very good.

There is some extra cooling consideration needed when you populate all 4 slots. But I think you will be OK. The agent was probably told to stick to the list.

And if the memory doesn't work at that frequency you can always return it. Or you can use it at a lower frequency.

If I return, Newegg will charge me restocking fee and shipping fee.

I received an email from support of ASUS. I asked them about compatibility between the 32GB and 64GB kits with this MB. They mentioned "Please be advise that you must utilize the components that are listed on the QVL list so that you can assure that it will work properly when you installed it." They also said that the list is up to date when I questioned about the list does not list any RAM kit more than 16GB despite they advertise that the MB supports up to 64GB. They also suggested buying the RAM modules together as a kit. If I listen to them, it means that I can only install 16GB in this motherboard. Could you please have a look?

The QVL for this mb is at:

Alternatively, know any other motherboards that is compatible with Ubuntu linux?

That hasn't been my experience. I have returned a graphics card to Newegg without any restocking fees. I've also returned a case to Amazon without any restocking fee.

The list of supported processors is different than the QVL for memory. The list of supported processors define which processors will work the motherboard. The QVL is a list of vendor memory that passed their review process.

The supported memory specification is the list that I would pay most attention to.
