[SOLVED] Asus Router Not Recognising WiFi Password

From time to time my Asus RT-AC88U AC3100 will not let you log in with the WiFi SSID of my main network, reports incorrect password (even though it's correct) However you can log in to my guest network with its password to go online?

In the system, I also have 2 'Mesh routers' Asus RT-AC67U AC1900, that create two (cabled) Wifi access points.

Normally a power cycle of the main AC88 will get things up and running again and the main wifi network can be connected to , however currently the issue is that I can connect via the Mesh AC67 AP's, but not the main AC88? Also the other issue this time is that I am unable to connect to items on my home network while away from home using port forwarding, IP camera, servers, AC88 admin etc.

Anyone else have similar issues?

Also apart from the above I have noticed from time to time while on my AC88 home page the number of Mesh devices can change 0,2,1,2,2,2,1,1,2 etc. every 30 sec or so.....

Solution
This is one of the reasons I hate any form of link aggregation. The method used to choose the path the data takes tends to cause issues to appear to be random. It tends to be very hard unless you suspect a issue with the port bonding to test and force traffic over one link or the other.

I have spent so much time chasing strange errors like this. Problem is you reset a port and the problem goes away for a while and you don't even suspect it was a port aggregation issue. I would see things like some file transfers would run slow because it was running on the link that was having issues. I would rerun the test which used different port numbers and it would move to the other link and not have problems. Took a long time to see...

IP conflict or network loop perhaps.

Clarify that "red line" WAN connection.

Do you truly mean that there is a hard wire (ethernet) connection between 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.5?

Which actually is the grey line ethernet connection between the two. Which ports are being used on each device?

The HG612 being Huawei EchoLife Modem and the red line actually represents the incoming connection via your ISP - correct?

And is the RT-AC88U actually plugged into that Netgear 8 Port Switch as seems to be indicated by that small grey squiggle between the two?

Which Router is responsible for DHCP? I would expect that to be the RT-AC88U (192.168.0.1)

What DHCP IP address range is that router using?

Are the Static IP addresses reserved on that router via the applicable device MACs?

Look at the router's list of network devices to learn what the router is "seeing".

Run "arp -a" via the Command Prompt on a couple of the network computers. Use both wired and wireless computers.

Compare the resulting Internet Addresses and Physical Address to current network devices. Look for conflicts, unexpected devices, missing devices.

With multiple wireless devices the "netsh wlan show all" command run via a wireless computer may prove helpful as well.

Objective being to compare your expectations and desired network configuration to what the router and other devices are "seeing".

Just to say things run fine for many weeks even months then I have this issue.
The system has been connected like this for some time, most of it for years.

Clarify that "red line" WAN connection.

Do you truly mean that there is a hard wire (ethernet) connection between 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.5?
Yes, as well as the Normal WAN connection there is also an ethernet cable from the AC88 to the HG612 (One of the ports that is normally covered over - it has custom firmware installed). It can be logged into at that IP address.

Which actually is the grey line ethernet connection between the two. Which ports are being used on each device?
Normal ethernet port on AC88 to LAN1 on HG612

The HG612 being Huawei EchoLife Modem and the red line actually represents the incoming connection via your ISP - correct?
Yes

And is the RT-AC88U actually plugged into that Netgear 8 Port Switch as seems to be indicated by that small grey squiggle between the two?
Yes, just knocked up diagram online, Single Ethernet then Two Bonded Ethernet between that and 24 Port.

Which Router is responsible for DHCP? I would expect that to be the RT-AC88U (192.168.0.1)

What DHCP IP address range is that router using?
Yes RT-AC88U is the only device on the network that handles the DHCP.
IP Range 192.168.0.130 to 192.168.0.199
Other devices outside of the range are either manual static IP or automatic BUT assigned by MAC.

The router normally sees about 50 devices, however currently seeing about 38,40. All wired devices appear visible and also WiFi devices appear to be able to connect to either of the mesh nodes, however devices closest to the AC88U see the network but don't accept the password - its correct and they connect automatically when closer to the other nodes.

When this strange issue appears you can always switch to the guest network when near to the AC88U and go online, but not see the local network (Obviously how it's set). A power cycle will normally sort, but not this time.

I will try your further suggestion this evening and in the morning and report back.

Thank you for your time!

Just an interim thought/question: I am correctly understanding being that there are 10 - 12 devices "missing".

Can you associate those missing devices with a specific switch, IP address set/range, location, any common factor? Keep that in mind as well.

Once device that can only connect to the AC88U is:-

Echo Dot Living Room 68:****:F5 and is assigned 192.168.0.121 by MAC

Most of the time the last 2 days it has not been able to connect.

Why is AC88U not seeing the mesh devices? 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3?

Also, I am not seeing Echo Dot Living Room 68 in the devices list - maybe because it is not able to connect...

Netgear 192.168.0.24 is listed. Where is 192.168.0.25?

What is that TP-LINK device 192.168.0.166? Would expect it to be in the network diagram.

Also from the router's log: are you able to map the MACs that are being associated and disassociated to specific network devices?

The allowed DHCP IP address range is set to be 192.168.0.130 to 192.168.0.199: Any limits on the number of connected devices?

I counted 14 MAC-IP Bindings. Any chance that the count is exceeding some limit there? Especially if some of those bindings are missing wireless devices not appearing in the device list.

Have you tried pinging the router from the various missing wireless devices? Or tried "tracert" to the router?

Also did you note anything astray via "arp -a" and "netsh"?

Lastly, do you have or are you using any network discovery and mapping tools?

Objective being to "see" what the network is "seeing" and compare that to your expectations.

=======

Another thought:

Overall going out of my comfort zone somewhat but another factor may be "Roaming aggressiveness" with respect to the wireless devices.

I don't think the AC88U is supposed to display the AiMesh nodes in the list of devices, just shows the nodes on a different part of the web interface.

Echo Dot Living Room is unable to connect to the AC88U WiFi (See Mobile phone example in my next post)

Netgear 192.168.0.24 is listed. Where is 192.168.0.25?
Don't know..... It is shown this morning on the same list.

Forgot that was in, its a RE450 AP, I was going to try and do something with it regarding the guest network, that anoyingly the AiMesh nodes can't do! But its just sitting on my network with no WiFi turned on.

Looking at a section of log from this morning these are all wireless devices that are close to the AC88U and would struggle to see the other AiMesh nodes, but may see them I guess if they could not connect to the AC88U that is much closer to them. The only exception is the 0.96 the bell ringer that is midway between the AC88U and one of the nodes.

The allowed DHCP IP address range is set to be 192.168.0.130 to 192.168.0.199: Any limits on the number of connected devices?
No limits as far as I know, the lease time I have is the default 1 day (86400 Seconds)

I counted 14 MAC-IP Bindings. Any chance that the count is exceeding some limit there? Especially if some of those bindings are missing wireless devices not appearing in the device list.
Should be allowed up to 64 MAC > IP Bindings. I did notice that the 8 Port netgear was on 0.131 and not 0.23 but a switch reboot had reassigned the correct IP to its MAC

Have you tried pinging the router from the various missing wireless devices? Or tried "tracert" to the router?
If I am on a device that is unable to connect how can I then ping it or anything else? I am not connected to the network.

Ping:

Last item ("ping") first. Try from the device and then from another location try pinging the device.

There are multiple ping switches you can use. The objective being to methodically map out the ping failures.

FYI:

Lease time:

One day is a viable and common lease time. However, with the number of devices you have and the mix of devices (wired, wireless, DHCP, Static IP, MAC-binding) suggests that there is lot of network traffic with regards to just renewing leases. And as various devices are turned on or off the other devices are dealing with the arp tables constantly changing and needing updates. That would be for IPv4 - do you also have IPv6? IPv6 would make it all the more complicated.

No harm in establishing a longer lease time. Try changing the lease time to one week. Goal is to obtain a stable network where all of the various devices do not need to be constantly renewing

I have in mind two objectives: First eliminate IP address conflicts as a potential culprit. Second, use that elimination process as a way to identify a faulty device that may be continually (for what ever reason) dropping out and needing to rejoin the network.

Overall you have narrowed it down to the wireless devices near the AC88U.

What is needed is a view of the network as it "sees" itself". That is why I asked about tools.

Are you familiar with nmap? Or Powershell?

Both can be used but consider Advanced IP Scanner (Free) to easily take a big picture look at your network.

Just a typo in a MAC could be the root issue....

Just backed up setting in AC88U and did a factory reset.

However once this was complete I tried to connect to the default OPEN WiFi (As would be when new), but the connection could not be made on either 2.4G or 5G.

Connect > Disconnect > Connect every 10 seconds or so

With this behaviour trying to connect to essentially a new router with open WiFi then I can only assume the AC88U has gone faulty?

Yes, "faulty" is a possibility.

And that 10 second pattern is certainly supportive of some fault.

However, as the router was reset to factory settings there is a requirement that you go back into the applicable router admin screens and ensure that some previous configuration setting was not overlooked.

Were the router backup settings truly up to date?

Are only the 5G wireless devices having problems?

Do you see the same "Wifi keeps disconnecting" on 2G wireless devices?

Based on your comment however, it does appear that no wireless is working - correct?

Any errors in the router logs?

Any wired device problems?

Do the following links present the manuals for your AC88U?

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-AC88U/ASUS_AiMesh_Setup_Guide.pdf

https://setuprouter.com/router/asus/rt-ac88u/manual-2120.pdf

Doublecheck the configuration settings, run through the troubleshooting again.

If the problem continues then the router may indeed be the problem.

I have also just discovered that if I allow Guest access to Intranet then devices can no longer log on to SRPhotography_Guest. Once I put the setting back to normal i.e. Internet only for Guest then WiFi devices can once again connect as Guest to the AC88U.

Changed lease time to 7 days.

I only use IPv4, I disable IPv6 as I dont need to use it and life is complicated enough!

output. Not sure why 0.3 Mesh is currently not showing.

Why does Adv IP scanner show some devices that have not been powered on or used for months?

Per Advanced IP Scanner:

Dead RT-AC67U-0FD0 192.168.0.3 # ?

Correct me if I am wrong but I would certainly expect that device to be in the "Ok" column. What is its MAC?

And if, being in a state of demise, it appears to the network as 192.168.0.101 being your

GIGA-BYTE TECHNOLOGY CO LTD device (source your Post #8 list) that is certain going to cause confusion.

Look at the MACs for both devices.

As for devices that have not been powered on or used for months my thought is simply that Advanced IP Scanner is not purging such devices. May not be an available function, may not be configured to do so, or the default purge time is very long or even indefinite.

Check Advanced IP Scanner to determine if you can purge or otherwise update the current listing.

Overall, I am thinking more and more that the problem is a MAC error or typo.

Take a very close look at device IPs and their corresponding MACs - especially if reserved or bound.

Start with the key network devices. Those devices shown in your diagram. Update and correct the diagram. Add the device MACs to the diagram.

Mac addresses never really leave the lan. In addition mac addresses are not actually unique even though people think they are. Companies have a large pool of mac addresses but they must reuse them. You normally never see this but if you for example buy 10,000 laptops from say HP or Dell you will find some of them have the same mac address.

Now things just got confusing.

I just disconnected my entire network and power cycled my main router 192.168.0.1, leaving WiFi Home Network and Guest Network Enabled.

All my WiFi devices, some that have not connected for a few days all connected to the WiFi
