ASUS router suddenly decreased range (NEED HELP)

My router was perfectly fine a week ago, but for some reason , my router range decreased and when I go upstairs (router in the basement and nothing blocking it) I get 1 bar, but when I go downstairs into the basement I get 5. just remember a few weeks ago, I got 5 bars upstairs. everything is slow including my roku, other pc and my kindle fires. my cordless phones are not interfering since they were not a few weeks ago and nobody is using the same channel as us. my router was in the same position that is was in a few weeks ago. what could be the problem. (don't tell me to check if anything is interfering since nothing has changed, we asked neighbors and they said they didn't add routers or cordless phones) oh and one more thing, don't view unless your going to answer since I need help right now. specs- router is an Asus rt n65 r

Did the router orientation change? Did it fall over or get rotated? Did something get placed near/above it?

If those questions are "too basic and obvious" then you probably won't find much assistance....

The most reliable answer is to use ethernet cable or power line network between floors and add an access point since the antennas from the N65R can't be re-oriented to provide better vertical coverage. They are oriented to provide primarily horizontal coverage.
