So, i have been having an issue recently and from what i could figure out, its not the modem or my isp seems like, i could be wrong. About 3 times a day i will loose internet for about 5 minutes and it'll come back. I have done a network diagnostic when it drops and once it was the modem, and another time it said it was the router. I also did a quick search and learned that Asus routers are notorious for dropping internet randomly. Has any one else had this issue and is there a fix for it? I can provide more information if needed.

What "network diagnostic" was run?

Look in Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer for any error codes, warnings, or even informational events that may have been captured just before or at the time that the internet is lost.

Another place to look is in Task Scheduler: some app or utility may be being triggered and causing the internet issue.

Wired or wireless connectivity?

Make and model modem?

This Asus router?

Also check the router's logs if available and enabled. Who has full admin rights to the router or modem/router? You will need help from that person.

The app for the router has a built in diagnostic, not sure how good it is. My main pc is wired, everything else is wireless but everything drops off. The make and model of modem is HiTron DOCSIS EN2251-RES. Spectrum supplied this one. Yes, thats the router, pretty sure i have full admin rights to it, bought it and set it up myself. Left everything as is from the supplier, just updated firmware

The most likely point of failure is going to be the connection to the ISP.

I have not used that brand of modem and the online manuals seem to be marketing garbage. Can you actually log into the device and see things like signal levels and logs.
Do the lights change on the modem during this time the internet is down. The 5 minutes of outage is about how long it takes for the modem to retrain itself to the ISP.

The asus router has a log not sure if you have to turn things on to get it to log more than the default. Key would be if it appears to reboot. That would really be the only thing that would indicate it was the router itself and take 5 minutes. It might show the wan port going up and down if there is a cable problem. Most issue you see related to the router are wifi issues but you are running ethernet which is good.

You could plug directly into the modem to eliminate the router but I am going to bet it is some cable issue. You can check all the coax in your house to see if all the connection are tight and clean. Most times the cable issue are someplace out in the street.
If you can see them the signal levels in the modem displays will generally give you a clue if you have bad cables in the path.

I starting to think it is on the isp end of things. Was having the phone go down too, which runs through the modem. The lights on the modem don't change anymore but on my old one they used to, i think they gave me a used modem, looks like the top 2 lights are out completely. I was thinking it was the router just because of the light issue on the modem and i found quite a few post talking about bad firmware with it. Got another tech coming out soon to take yet another look at it, so i guess we'll see.

asus firmware and support are one of the best. Last I saw they use a unified image so any fix for the newest router will also go into older ones.

It depends on the modem the one I have you can see in the log where it reboot/reconnects.

Oddly enough, being plugged into an old power strip seems to have been the cause
