I just brought a Asus RT-N53 dual band router. I'm not super techy, so please bear with me. All help is highly appreciated. I tried calling Asus and just got put on hold, then sent to voicemail. :(

I set it up and it seemed to be fine streaming video, but after 5 minutes the 5ghz band froze and lost internet. The 2.4 was still working though. I restarted the router and the 5ghz worked again, then 5 minutes later it disappeared again the 2.4ghz is working.

I'm using a mid-2012 macbook pro
also using airplay to appletv 4th gen (ethernet to router)

I do have a att microcell via ethernet to the router that may be effecting things?

for the 5ghz settings:
I've tried auto and N only mode (choice are N or A or Auto)
Channel is on auto (cause I don't know what is best)

Everything is within 3 feet of each other.

So after reading further and discovering the "wireless diagnostics" built into osx, I found that there are only 2 other other 5ghz networks nearby and now I'm certain I'm on a different channel than those.

So the next day, the 5ghz won't show up at all. No computer I have can see the SSID. 5 calls to asus later and I haven't gotten through to anyone. Clearly they have too many problems to handle.

This is why I've switched to mac. I'm going to just get a mac airport. Mac stuff works 98% of the time (yes lemons happen to all products), but at least they have customer support that answers the phone and stores I can walk into and get it fixed.

Same problem here. I have an Asus RT N53 and the 5ghz band won't stay connected on my macbook pro. Sometimes i can connect to it, then after 20 or such minutes it disconnects and disappears from my list of wireless networks. Then after several hours, or even a day, or if i reset the router, it reappears and works again. Then it stops working again, and so on, the cycle is repeated. Any thoughts on how to solve this problem? Is the router having issues? Should i send it back to get it checked out?

Problem solved!!! All you need to do is go in your router settings -> Advanced Settings -> Wireless and then for each bandwidth change the Authentication Method to WPA2-Personal. This will make your 5ghz band visible and will not longer disconnect you.
