ASUS RT-N56U - recover lost admin password

I have an ASUS RT-N56U router and have forgotten what the admin password was reset to. I have followed the 30-30-30 steps that put it into rescue mode and have used the ASUS utilities to find and flash the router with the latest firmware. The problem is that it still seems to have retained the forgotten password and not set it back to the factory default admin password.

If anyone knows of a way to truly reset this router back to all of its defaults, it would be appreciated.

Notes:
Router is powered up and working, having retained the wireless security settings that I gave it.

I actually forgot my password like.. a week into setting it up. I haven't done any firmware updates, but all I did was press the reset button on the router and went through the setup again and I was able to make a new password.

Do you have the same model as me? I was previously able to follow your steps on a Linksys, but they are not working on this ASUS router.

I have the exact same router. I've done it twice in the past; pressed the button, accessed the router via 192.168.1.1, and it has always prompted me to go though the setup.
