Hi there,
I have the Asus S550C and the maximum amount of ram is 8GB but i chucked a 8GB piece in and its running 11.5GB, which is great I also did 2 memory tests and all came out clean. But I find the computer slightly slower than before adding the ram. What could this be?
The ram i had in my computer was a 6GB DDR3 and now i have a 4GB and a 8GB of ddr3 ram in my computer.
Also on CPU-Z slot 1 and 3 are used but 2 and 4 are not?

When mixing RAM, you're limited to worst of the mixture. For example, the 4GB DIMM might look like this: 8-8-8-24 1600MHz and your 8GB might look like this: 9-9-9-27 1066MHz. In a scenario like this, with your BIOS settings at "[Auto]", your motherboard will automatically degrade performance to the 8GB DIMM specs, since that is its max potential.

To alleviate this problem, it is best to install matching DIMMs that were purchased as a kit. I.E. two DIMMs in one package.

Ah I see, so if i put 2 of the same 8gb ram would that work better

"Work better." That's a little subjective. Installing matching DIMMs provides better stability, in the sense that all of the installed RAM should be peforming equally.

You haven't listed the specifications of either the 4GB, the 6GB, nor the 8GB DIMMs. That said, without knowing what the specs are, there I cannot tell you that matching the specs to the 8GB DIMM would increase your system's performance.

Sorry so the 4GB and the 2GB are DDR3 Pc3-12800 Hyundai Electronics.
And the 8GB that is installed atm along with the 4GB is the DDR3 Pc3-12800 Kingston.
The only difference i can tell is the manufacture.

To clarify when I got my laptop I had a 4GB and a 2GB piece in there for a total of 6GB then I bought a 8GB piece of DDR3 ram and I installed it and replaced it with the 2GB. So now im my laptop I have a 4GB piece and a 8GB piece

Almost there, but not quite. There are two easy ways to determine the specs on your RAM:

1. Go to www.crucial.com, and allow the scan tool to run; and
2. Download and installCPU-Z, and then check the "Memory" tab.

When you find out the specs of your SO-DIMMs, remove the lower performing module with one that matches the higher performing module.

Also, see if you can find the DRAM settings in your BIOS. If it is accessible, it will probably be in the Advanced section. If you can access it, make sure you adjust the settings to match the settings of the modules.

If this seems foreign to you, the settings I'm referring to are the specifications you'll get from CPU-Z or Crucial.

I told you my specs of my ram lol "Sorry so the 4GB and the 2GB are DDR3 Pc3-12800 Hyundai Electronics.

What is the voltage specification? what is the latency? When you find the answers to this, match the best, or even better, buy a kit.

I have know idea

I have 2 choices :
- Corsair Vengeance
- Kingston Hyper Impact

Which one you recommend ? The laptop is not used for games, just the usual stuff.
On the official page, for S550C says that 8Gb is max memory, but from what i have saw here, it works even with 12GB. Thanks.

I went down to my pc shop and got some. as long as its the same speed it doesn't matter I think. When I asked the pc guy he said it could support like 32gb the only reason the max is 8gb was cause when they made the laptop 8gb was reasonable and any more was pointless.

All goods, I couldn't find a definite answer too, A little tip this laptop is so crap Already sent it in 4 times, why do you need 16gb? I don't even use 8?

I have had my hard drive die on me my screen backlight broke, the wifi card stopped working and I had to send that in. and it randomly turns off for no reason, even after sending it in twice and they just blow my hard drive away and thinks that's what has fixed it.. I have had it 11 months so far..
My 8gb of ram was 170 bucks I live in nz but dam its expensive..
