ASUS STIX 980 TI in SLI

I would like to put two ASUS STIX 980 TI in SLI.

-> Should I consider a 3-way SLI motherboard or can I stick with the lower cost 2-way SLI motherboards to prevent heating issues with this card?
-> Are there 2-way SLI motherboards with sufficient spacing?

Would the considerations be the same if I tend to go with Zotac GTX 980 TI AMP Edition?

Should be fine with most SLI mobos? Are you looking at 2011, 2011 v3 or 1150 mobos? I've got a pair of the 980 Strix on my Z97 Hero with no problems
