Asus Strix 980 - High temps and loud fan?

So compared to all of the reviews that I've read, my temps seem to be abnormally high and the fan seems to be spinning too fast + loud.

Almost all of the reviews I've read have put the load temp, even when OC'd around 68c, definitely under 70c, with the fans staying pretty much inaudible at about 45%. My card though always hits around 78c under load and the fan goes as high as 60% on an auto fan curve. Is this normal, or am I missing something that the reviewers are not?

If I try manually setting the fan to about 45%, my temps just shoot up, especially my vrm temps (although I've heard that the vrms on 980s go pretty high).

I'm considering reseating the cooler with some new thermal paste, but would like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Solution
Get rid of dust and (if you feel safe doing this) take the heatsink off and reapply some good quality thermal paste.

I'm not sure but I feel like, Asus will void the warranty if you take the heatsink off so if anything you are better off if you just RMA your card.

Plus, aren't STRIX voltage locked? If you plan on doing some good overclocking then RMA the card and get MSI Gaming 4G or Gigabyte G1.

Hey thanks everyone for the replies.

So I guess it was just a bad thermal paste application. I took off the heatsink and reapplied and temps dropped by about 8c which now allows the fan to run at about 51%. Not quite as cool and quiet as the reviews but much better than before.

As far as RMA, I was able to pick it up open box (but unopened) for $400 on Amazon and had family bring it back for me overseas, so that won't be possible haha. Still very happy with the card though!

Thanks for the help!

Alright then, enjoy your card!
