Asus strix gtx 1080

Hey guys i want to upgrade to a gtx 1080 im mainly looking at 1440p for now maybe 4k next year or so.

Currently i have
h97 pc mate
I7 4790k
8gb ddr3
Msi gtx 960 100me 2gb

Do i have to upgrade anything before getting the 1080? Would i be better off with a 1070 and should i go for 16gb ddr3?

16 gb wouldn't hurt.
1070 could be enough for 1440p, but for 4k not really.
You may need to upgrade PSU for 1080 though.
