So I wound up getting a second R9 390 from a friend (was going off to university and couldn't take his computer. It's a long story) I'd like to crossfire it with one that I already have in an existing system, but for the life of me can't figure out how to enable it.

Does anyone have any hints or tricks (a guide would be a godsend at this point)

Please provide more information about your system specifications, especially your MB and PSU?
The R9 390 Series Graphics Cards do not require a CrossFire Bridge, they communicate via the PCI-E lanes.

Base system is an i5-6600K on an MSI Gaming M7 motherboard. 16GB of RAM. 1000W Corsair HX1000i Platinum PSU

You should have no problems with that setup and my link should help you figure it out.
Make sure drivers are up to date and correct Bios configuration.
