Hi
What would be the ideal NVMe SSD upgrade for the laptop?
I would like to use the SSD as a boot drive.
I am looking at Samsung SSD 980 and Crucial P2 NvMe SSD.
Please share your opinions.

either will be okay.

the ASUS TUF15's have 2 NVMe ports (one filled with your original drive) and 1 2.5" slot. the thing is there are a LOT of screws between you and the ports -- 11 I think

According to this guide to upgrading the laptop, here, you should have an option for one or two M.2 NVMe SSD's in the laptop while still retaining the option for a 2.5" form factor HDD. Out of curiosity, which SKU do you have or rather which laptop version do you have?

Given the slots that system has, I would leave your OS drive alone, and just install extra storage, in the other M.2 slot, and maybe even the 2.5" bay with a sata SSD.

What is the make and model of the ssd that is in the machine now?
Is there a problem with the ssd?
Why do you want to upgrade it?

Western digital 1 TB SN530 NVME.Following a sudden shutdown while booting owing to unknown battery discharge, a few days ago, the SSD has been acting weird. That is the reason for upgrade.

Run a chkdsk on the ssd see what it has to say.

That looks clean.
What do you mean by the ssd has been acting weird?

Games take longer time to load than before.
On game load screen the PC hangs. Occasionally micro stutters are there.
All this occuring post the shutdown.
I have clean installed Win 10.
But the issue is there.
I ran SFC and it came out clean.

I did clean install on an UEFI image from my USB drive.

Was said install revision the latest, from Microsoft? An older revision can cause issues, as I found out the hard way, when I first went Ryzen.

Yes I have installed the latest version.

It should be under warranty, I would contact tech support, and try to see if you can get the issue resolved, without throwing money at it.
