ASUS U57A Exceeding Ram Expansion Amount

I've spent a lot of time on the forum researching models and mobos discerning whether I can put 2x8GB sticks for a total of 16GB in the ASUS U57A; thus, exceeding the 8GB ASUS claims as the max for this model. I'd like to find someone who has done so successfully, and how so (BIOS update, etc.). ASUS technical support wasn't much help. I would like to use lightroom and do some editing, but the 6GBs makes it choppy. Any help would be appreciated. Max module size using PC Wizard states 32000 some odd MB (so 32gb) for mobo under physical memory tab.

My system:

Asus U57A
Windows 7 64 bit HP
MOBO-Asus K55A/Intel HM76 Chipset
CPU-i5 2450M
Video-Onboard HD 3000

Thanks for any help in advance,

Brett

You can't. If ASUS says that's the max, that's the max. When the board is designed for a specific cap on the RAM nothing is going to change that. The voltage requirements, cooling and firmware are designed around the CPU and RAM so if it wasn't designed for it, that's it. Changing the motherboard to a model that used a similar chassis but had a higher cap would be the only way and the price of that probably makes it unsound as an option.

Am not sure, but you say you have 6gb right now. With that it might run single channel which can hurt performance too.Maybe upgrading with one 4gb module might also give a performance boost? Something to think about.

Pay attention here boys and girls, Vic is probably right about that. Nice call Vic, that's very possible.

I'd also check to see that the speed of the module you installed is the exact same as the integrated module. Otherwise it might be underclocking everything to whichever one has the slower speed and timings. What is the model number of the module you installed?
