Hi there,

I have a question about the Bios 317 update for my ASUS Vivobook F556UV-DM196T
On the ASUS website I can find the latest Bios here ASUS Official BIOS, stated as version 317. My problem is that there is no information whatsoever on what the changes are.

I actually want to upgrade my RAM. it has 4GB 'onboard the MoBo and 2 extra ram slots. Originally it can have a max of 8GB. But because alot of the F556U versions have theirs max at 12GB I am wondering if there has been a Bios update that changed it for my version.
Also since it is impossible to find 2x2GB sodimm ram. Only ones I can find is 2x4GB. I know they will run at the lowest speed of Mhz, but I think I might have a problem if the amount of GB is higher than the size that is meant to be. 8GB (4GB onboard and 2x2GB adde) total, instead of 12GB (4GB onboard and 2x4GB added) total

I hope someone can help me with a changelog of that Bios and also my question if it will actually be able to run 2x8GB as 2x4GB if it does only accept a total of *GB ram.

Gr,
JK

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

This isn't the first time Asus have parsed a BIOS update without any mention of what's been changed. Perhaps it's to address security or performance issues.

Are you sure about the laptop having two SO-DIMM slots? Google search tells me that your laptop should have one ram slot. I'm guessing you used something along the lines of CPU-Z to tell you how many slots you've got on your motherboard. I would advise disassembling your laptop and seeing if you have a slot to begin with.

Just an FYI, if you're looking for ram for that...

Just an FYI, if you're looking for ram for that laptop, you can't go beyond DDR4-2133MHz due to the integrated memory controller on your processor.

Thanks you very much for your welcoming and the quick reply.

Okay, good to know that about ASUS.

Are you sure about the laptop having two SO-DIMM slots?
Yes, you are totally right about that. It has only one slot. I checked that after posting this message and now I know why this specific version is set to go only to 8GB.

Thank you very much for this information. I will make sure to pick the correct one. At least a single 4GB stick is not that hard to find.

Thank you very much !
