The ASUS X79 System Design Challenge - Round 2

Exclusively for the Tom's Hardware Community, ASUS is giving away the just-announced, brand spankin' new X79 Motherboards in a contest that will test your skill at building the best of three categories of systems.

Round 1: The COOLEST System
This portion of the contest has ended. Winners will be announced in the news section of the main site.

Round 2: The FASTEST System
In the second round, create the fastest system you can using the new ASUS P9X79 DELUXE Motherboard and any ASUS graphics card, and be entered to win a ASUS P9X79 DELUXE Motherboard along with an Intel® Core™ i7-3930K LGA 2011 processor, a Corsair Vengeance 16GB Quad-Channel Memory Kit and a Corsair Hydro Series H80 CPU Cooler!

Your build must be submitted in this thread to qualify, and should minimally include CPU, ASUS P9X79 DELUXE Motherboard, any ASUS Graphics Card, RAM, a hard drive or SSD, Case and Power Supply.

This is an all around and very usable daily build with all sorts of benches in mind: 3DMark11, 3DMark Vantage, ATTO, AS SSD, IoMeter, etc. FancyCache achieves insane SSD benchmarks e.g. 7GB/8GB in CrystalDiskMark is typical, improves GPU scoring, and is compatible with ASUS LGA 2011/X79 MOBOs ; since it's configurable it can be tailored per test.

Fastest RAM and CPU orientated benchmarks. I have a total of (4) solid builds, but this one interested me because I sincerely feel that I could obtain a World Record! It doesn't get any FASTER! If I know anything, I know my RAM

I may post the other builds later... Nothing in this build is compromised, all outstanding components are used. If ASUS, Intel and Corsair is/are willing to sponsor me then I'm willing to make the record attempt.

Currently the SuperPI World Record is on an i7-980X/LGA 1366 @ 6.8516GHz with a Super PI 32M time of 5min 13.719s with a RAM speed of DDR3-2076 CL6-6-6-18 1T using 3x2GB Corsair Dominator GT. The best on a SB i7-2600K/LGA 1155 platform was a Super PI 32M time of 5min 33.172s with a RAM speed of DDR3 2340MHz CL6-9-6-25 1T.

So the goal is to keep some form of CL 6 + DDR3-2XXX and hopefully get DDR3 ~2400MHz CL6-8-6-24 1T or DDR3 23XXMHz CL6-8-6-25 1T with a time 32M time of <5min 12.XXXs aided by the LGA 2011 Quad Channel and the i7-3960X large 12MB L3 cache. Also, if necessary disabling cores to obtain the highest possible CPU OC. LN2 on both the CPU and RAM plus severe overvolting the RAM is required, stability 'should' be aided by the RAM also being on LN2. In combination with insanely OC'ed everything including: CPU on LN2 (5.4GHz~5.6GHz+), and RAM > Rated (DDR3-2300~2400+ and CAS OC)

ATTO, AS SSD, IoMeter, PCMark Vantage x64 HDD Suite, etc benchmarks are all about SSD speed, IOPS and RAID 0 scales very well with the Corsair 80,000 IOPS and 550MB/s Read with 490MB/s Writes. In this RAID 0 configuration I can easily expect 2GB/s+ Read & Writes. The LSI 9265-8i is one of the finest RAID Controllers you can buy; most benchmarks overlooked the FastPath Key (3X performance gains) not to be confused with the 'software' version, and have subsequently lost significant I/O in the process. It's also imperative that you check and use the most optimized firmware and block size. FancyCache will be tailored per test.

Fastest is in the Benchmark's eye of the beholder, for which is the reason for purposed builds so that they are tailored to the demands placed upon the system. In other words optimized allocation of finite resources to maximized intended results.

I contacted all (Google Shopper, Price Grabber and Nextag) the low priced distributors of ASUS ENGTX590/3DIS/3GD5 and ENGTX580/2DI/1536MD5 GPUs, none of them are available nor will restock the ASUS ENGTX580/2DI/1536MD5 EOL (End of Life) GPU; this is not a 'Sold-Out' issue. The only budget limited workaround is to use (1) ASUS GTX triple width, bottom position (PCIe 3.0_4) mixed with non-ASUS GPUs. I will not nor will I ever purposely mislead anyone.

I too chose items that were available at design time for round 1, but it might be hard to enforce if the store actually sells out.

If one were working on an actual build, one would have to go to an alternate source as a backup plan. Maybe one should list an alternate store (or the manufacturer's site)?

So here it is, the "MaxOC": An out of the box speed king, with the sky as the limit for your overclocking potential. Not only is this build a speed demon, unlike many other builds in this competition, the "MaxOC" could easily be used as your day to day rig for years to come! It brings to the table the best bang for buck LGA2011 chip on the market, the 3930K. This unlocked processor has been shown to easily reach 4.5 Ghz on air, and with a Corsair H80 brought to the table, it would be easy to exceed the clocks of an air cooled Extreme 3960K....extra cache can only do so much. ASUS's P9X79 Deluxe comes with every bell and whistle one can desire, including built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and has the ability to overvolt any segment of the board with DIGI+ and amazing ability to remote overclock. The RAM in this build is G.Skill's newest line of the Sniper Gaming Series, and this 16GB quad channel kit is ready to impress with its 9-11-10-28 timings @ 1.65V for 2133 Mhz, it will easily overclock to the 2400 threshold giving the "MaxOC" ridiculous speeds for memory. In order to maintain this high level of speed across the entire system, 3 ASUS dual slot 6970s in Tri-CrossFire is combined with a pair of Muskin Enhanced's blazing fast 120GB Chronos Deluxe SSDs in RAID-0 . Tri-Fire 6970s from ASUS has been shown to beat basically every dual card setup and many triple card setups on the market with ease, and the "MaxOC" will be no exception. Not only will a pair of Mushkin Deluxe drives in RAID-0 going to accelerate this system to speeds unreached by many, but that amazingly speedy RAM will also be put to work using Romex's Primo Ramdisk & FancyCache software. Unlike other software solutions, this combination will allow the owner of the "MaxOC" to either run a non-algorithm RamDisk or an "optimized" RamCache using some of the fastest RAM on the market, bypassing speeds of 7GB/s reads and 8GB/s writes WITH EASE.

How does the "MaxOC" keep all these high clocking components running? By taking a Gold Award Editor's Choice from HardOCP Ultra X3 1600W Modular PSU, and installing it into an amazing gaming case, the Enermax Fulmo. The Fulmo comes with 3 120mm fans, two in the front and one on the rear, but has spots for 13+ fans, and the "MaxOC" has nearly every single spot occupied. The "MaxOC" has 2 140mm High Speed Yate Loon D14SH-12s in the top pushing air out while another one pulls air into the Fulmo from the bottom. To ensure cold air is poured into the case and cooling those tightly packed 6970s, SIX High Speed 120mm Yate Loon D12SH-12s are installed on the left side panel, and a slim Scythe Slip Stream 2000rpm fan is also installed on the right side panel. The rear exhaust fan will be moved to accompany the two already installed in the front, and the H80's radiator will be installed which will force air to be pulled through the radiator on its way out of the system. Cable ties are provided with the "MaxOC" to clean up the wires and help secure everything in a comfortable place inside the case. The fastest DVD burner speeds allowed with the 24x ASUS DRW-24B1ST will also give the owner of the "MaxOC" easy/fast install ability in case they can not acquire an iso image on a speedy 3.0 USB.
