The ASUS X79 System Design Challenge

Exclusively for the Tom's Hardware Community, ASUS is giving away the just-announced, brand spankin' new X79 Motherboards in a contest that will test your skill at building the best of three categories of systems.

Round 1: The COOLEST System
In this first round, create the coolest system you can using the new Sabertooth X79 Motherboard from ASUS and any ASUS graphics card, and be entered to win a SABERTOOTH X79 Motherboard from ASUS along with an Intel® Core™ i7-3930K LGA 2011 processor, a Corsair Vengeance 16GB Quad-Channel Memory Kit and a Corsair Hydro Series H80 CPU Cooler!

Your build must be submitted in this thread to qualify, and should minimally include CPU, Sabertooth X79 Motherboard, any ASUS Graphics Card, RAM, a hard drive or SSD, Case and Power Supply.

For this first round, stay within $1,500.00 (shipping not included, instant rebates allowed, combos allowed, mail-in rebates not allowed), and please be sure to format your list of components as follows for the sake of our reviewers:

You can also use the Tom's Hardware System Builder to build your recommendation, provided the required components have been added to the Pricegrabber database there, and use the BBCode export option at the bottom of the build. If you do, be sure to include a link in your post to your build on the app for quick viewing.

Once you have your build, you'll need to get the direct link to it here on this thread in order to enter the contest. You can get a direct link by hovering your mouse over the linked date at the top of your system build post in this thread and right-clicking, then clicking "Copy link address". Once you have that, head over to the Contest Entry & Rules Page and sign up! Winners will be chosen at random from the builds that qualify.

Total comes to $1499.91 without tax/shipping. I choose the name Revolution X because we named our high end Sandy Bridge system the Intel Revolution at work and I think a Sandy Bridge E should be Revolution X (X being short for Extreme).

Good luck to all but I wouldn't mind winning this.

* Cryogenic options:
1. Dry Ice 8.5# + Acetone (-78.5°C) $17.24; see above
2. Liquid Nitrogen/LN2 34L (−210 °C) $17
3. Liquid Helium/LHe 23L (-268.93°C) $17.25

Target OC 5.40GHz to 5.60GHz.

3DMark11 Benchmark is one of the primary driving forces for using cryogenic cooling. So it's important to have all fast components including a MOBO that can deliver the power. Currently the World Record 3DMark11 (27,928) held is based on ASUS X79 LGA 2011 MOBO and ASUS GPU's plus Intel i7 Sandy Bridge-E processor!
note: Dry ice (-78.5°C), Liquid Nitrogen (−210 °C) or especially Liquid Helium (-268.93°C) can be dangerous and cause severe burns; see precautions. The 'real' costs of Liquid Nitrogen or Liquid Helium are beyond the costs of the 'liquids' themselves, and therefore the per/L cost within the confines of budgeted item would be misleading and incorrect. You can rent a Dewar for $1~$10+/day or purchase a Dewar for $600+ in addition to the cost of the chosen cryonic; LN2 $0.50~$0.75/L and LHe $1~$2/L. In my area it's $100 + $1/day rental for 200L (5,000 (scf)) Dewar; AirGas will sell me whatever I need.Click for a mock-up of ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 with cooling pot. Example, a 52x~56x CPU multiplier, max is 57x, (5.2GHz~5.6GHz @ vCore of 1.70v) with the listed GPU will require 700W~730W, so adequate power is essential. Slurry mixtures can be used to maintain predictable temperatures.

Submersion cooling is pretty cool both in looks and actual cooling especially if you use a larger tank, and 10 Gal is considered pretty large. Dielectric Fluids and submersion are common for for super computing; typically super computers use low boiling point fluids like 3M™ Novec™ 7000 which sells for $200~300/Gal. Mineral Oil is non-conductive and offers 5.5X the Thermal Conductivity of Air. Nice videos to watch -> Video 1 and Video 2 -- this stuff is CrAzY Cool!

This is one very cold and fast PC. Coupling the best reviewed Case and CPU Cooler in terms of cooling power from vortez.com and frostytech.com respectively, this is going to be one cold system.

Ambient Temp in the In Win Case: http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/in_win_dragon_rider_review,8.html

Check out Frosty Tech's CPU Cooler rankings at frostytech.com.

This will be blazing fast when OC'd, and when everything is said and done, the ambient temp in the case will never be above 30c, and the GFX card and CPU will sit very cool at idle and max load.

LGA 2011 uses the same hole spacing as LGA1366 so it will fit. Any current LGA 1366 compatable cooler will fit in LGA 2011. As to how well they will cool when overclocked, thats the question.

Compromised on the HDD while the prices are stupidly high and got the cheapest one I could... So snagging that awesomely huge 6950 was possible, and with the spacing on the board, CFX is possible later on (after a bigger HDD and SSD of course). Cheap cooler too, but that CPU isn't gonna have to try too hard for quite a while, so I bet it'll stay cool (especially in that great deal of a case!).

Your winner has arrived!

Power Supply: OCZ Fatal1ty 550W $69.99
Cooling: XIGMATEK LOKI SD963 $24.99
DVD Burner: LITE-ON DVD Burner $18.99

A total price of $1492.91 What really messed up the build here was the fact that HDD's are so expensive right now. Soo... I looked at my options. I couldn't really get a better graphics card than what I got without jumping up another $50 so I went with the 6850 and a VERY good SSD (Crucial M4). The cooling is adequate and the power supply should be able to keep up with the proposed items. My priority of items, CPU>Mobo>RAM=GPU=SSD>Case>PSU=Cooling>DVD burner. Of course, I could have looked for slightly cheaper RAM, less RAM, and a Cheaper SSD in order to get a better GPU, but I am a firm believer that core components in a PC must be of similar tier with the exception that the CPU and MOBO can be as best as possible. Why? I've noticed a tendency in the PCs I've built that things run very smoothly when the parts are of medium tier all around. That's just my opinion.

Edit: Didn't realize there was a combo on Newegg, added that, also replaced 6850 with GTX560, price went over by around $10 so I replaced the larger case with a smaller but still useful HAF 922, New total price of $1502.91 I must emphasize the importance of having a good case. That's why I'm over $2.91

on top of that the cooler I chose is 1366 however requires a 2011 adapter..
