asus X99 AII motherboard doesn't detect m.2 Samsung 960 EVO

Hi guys,

3 days ago i bought these:

Motherboard ASUS X99-A II (LGA 2011-v3, Intel X99, ATX)
CPU Intel Core i7 6800K (LGA 2011-v3, 3.40GHz, Unlocked)
GPU Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (8GB, High End)
Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V (2x, 16GB, DDR4-3200, DIMM 288)
SSD m.2 Samsung 960 EVO (500GB, M.2 2280)
psu Corsair RM750i (750W)
CPU Cooler Corsair Hydro Series H110i
WiFi adapter ASUS PCE-AC56 (PCI-E x1, 866Mbit/s, 450Mbit/s)
Chassis Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow Edition (Full tower)

I put it all together and it seems to be working fine, but when I try to install Win10 on the m.2 disk I have some issues. BIOS doesn't detect the m.2 disk at all, i tried many settings. I created Win10 uefi bootable USB stick and install it from it. Windows sometimes sees the m.2 disk and copies files on it, but as the BIOS doesn't see the m.2 disk the installation never continues, but brings me back to the beginning. Could anybody help please? I am really frustrated with all this.

The below is what user ivanmalley posted in another thread and it solved my problem, but before that i reseated the m.2 because I think i had a dirt on pins or something.

I had the same problem but sorted it as follows, make sure you have the latest BIOS installed - mine is now on 2003 link here http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/Z170-PRO-GA...


1 - Make sure you unplug all SATA and USB drives, the M.2 drive has to be the only drive installed.

2 - Go into the bios, under the boot tab there is an option for CSM, make sure it is disabled.

3 - Click on secure boot option below and make sure it is set to other OS, Not windows UEFI.

4 - Click on key management and clear secure boot keys.

5 - Insert a USB memory stick with a UEFI bootable iso of Windows 10 on it, USB3 is quicker but USB2 works also. A Windows DVD won’t work unless you’ve created your own UEFI Bootable DVD.

6 - Press F10 to save, exit and reboot.

7 - Windows will now start installing to your NVME drive as it has its own NVME driver built in, I don't think this would work with previous versions.

8 - When the PC reboots hit F2 to go back into the BIOS, you will see under boot priority that windows boot manager now lists your NVME drive.

9 - Click on secure boot again but now set it to WIndows UEFI mode.

10 - Click on key management and install default secure boot keys

11 - Press F10 to save and exit and windows will finish the install.

Once you have Windows up and running, shutdown the PC and reconnect your other SATA drives. Do not put anything on SATA port 1 as this is now reserved for the NVME drive.

I would also recommend installing the Samsung NVME driver at this point to replace the Windows one.

The background here is NVME SSDs do not appear within the BIOS until Windows creates the system partition with the EFI Boot Sector.

Your M.2 SSD contains UEFI driver information within the firmware. By disabling the CSM module Windows will read and utilize the M.2-specific UEFI driver.

I was too happy
it seems that everytime i reboot the computer, it goes to bios screen because it cannot detect the m.2 disk, then i just turn off an back on and it sees the disk and all is as it should be. i don't know what to do again

i have the same problem nothing helps changing bios settings around many times. I think the x99 motherboard specially asus need bios update for 960 PRO.

M only able to use n see the drive if i shut down completely. If i was resstart even ones it goes to bios n dont have any boot drive. Then i shut down n n start back up n go into bios its there it says samsung 960 pro so i restart even that point guess wht drive is not there after words. So i have x99 A II asus. Shouldi try new mobo? Or diff x99 brand

Same problem... I have x99a-ii with i7-6850k and Samsung 960 Pro. Tried many times and settings, wouldn't work. I have to turn off my PC completely and boot again, then the PC will go into OS directly.

Guess I have the right combo. X99-A II and Samsung SSD 960 EVO 250GB and have had no problems. I updated bios to 1504 before installing ssd. Disconnected all other drives and usb junk. Then installed OS from USB without a hitch. Removed USB and set ssd as priority 1. Then Asus updated drivers. Then Windows updates. Guess I am charmed.

I feel the pain. Read about many unhappy users. You have been to the Asus Forums?

I followed ivanmalley's procedure listed above and it worked for me the 1st time with no problems.
