No idea where to start off since this is a long story. About a month ago I came into some money and bought parts for a completely new build. When I pieced together my new build and fired it up I was met with a black screen and the qcode 53 -memory initialization error. I originally assumed the ram wasn't installed correctly knowing the kind of person I am. So I reinserted it and powered it on again, still error code 53.

Confused I tried a different set of slots, error 53. I then tried a single stick of RAM thinking I might have a dead stick, again error 53. I tried each slot with every stick of RAM, resulting in error 53 again and again. Frustrated i decided to google the issue and same across a few solutions that said "try different ports" the exact thing i had done and a handful of posts that said clear the CMOS. I tried clearing the CMOS, still no luck, error code 53.

That's when I got on the phone with Asus component support, who told me to do the same things I had already tried. They also suggested I try pressonfthe mem ok button. I tried that, and yet again error code 53. Asus support then told me that I should rma my ram back to newegg. To be on the safe side however I rma'd both that motherboard and the ram I had to save time and to avoid future complications with the return policies and to rule out the possibility of a bad board or bad ram.

I get the new components in the mail a week later. I assembly everything back together and yet again with a new motherboard and a new set of RAM I get error 53. Fuming with frustration I called Asus support again, who then tell me my ram set wasn't on the certified vendor list. I take their advice and order a completely new set of RAM and plug it into my computer. You can probably guess what happens next, error code 53....

Frustrated and confused beyond words, I redo the same things I did earlier, try different slots, clear CMOS, etc. but was still met with error 53. I call up Asus and they told me to try flashing the BIOS. I flashed the BIOS but if course I was met with the bright red numbers 53. They then told me to contact newegg and have them replace my motherboard yet again. I was about to request yet another rma when a friend told me about how the memory controllers were on the i7s and told me to try a new processor. Honestly I was desperate enough to try anything, so after a quick talk with Intel I get them to replace my 5820k. I pop in the new CPU earlier this evening, and guess what???? Error 53.

At that point I pretty much snapped, I repeated every previous troubleshooting steps again with no luck. Honestly this build has probably been one the most frustrating thing I've had to deal with for a long time. While I'm not entirely new to pc building, I'm not exactly a veteran either. I have no conceivable idea why I can't get this machine to boot, and any help will be appreciated.

My specs are:

Motherboard: Asus X99 A/USB 3.1

CPU: Intel 5820k 3.3ghz

Ram: original set: Gskill ripjaw series V 16gb (2X8GB)
Set currently in board: Gskill ripjaw 4 series (4X4GB)

GPU: Gtx 980 ti

PSW: thermaltake 650W

A very big thank you in advance for any advice!!!

update:

I totally forgot to post the part numbers, my bad...

G.Skill Ripjwas 5 Series (first set I tried) F4-3200C16D-16GVK

G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Series (newest set I bought) F4-3000C15Q-16GRK

On the Rampage V Extreme, it has 2 BIOS. Make sure the BIOS selected is 1 (there is a button on the motherboard to toggle between Bios 1 and 2) - it's explained in the manual.

Then try flashing the bios using the USB BIOS flash. The directions I saw said it would only take 20 to 30 seconds, but mine took at least a minute.

This is what finally worked for me. The first time I flashed the bios I was on bios_2. Just on a lark I decided to try bios_1 as a last ditch attempt.

If anyone searching for this thread is STILL getting error 53 with multiple attempts with diff mobos and tried everything the internet has suggested (like flashing Bios, Mem OK, even RMAing your CPU, different RAM sticks):

THEN IT COULD LIKELY BE YOUR CPU FAILING.

I had this exact issue (except my system was running for a year before the mobo/cpu died) and spent over a week (40+ hrs) debugging, ordering new parts, ordered a 2nd CPU RMA (so I figured there was no way it was also bad) trying every configuration possible. Eventually I gave up and bought all new parts (not x99/5820k) and got my system up and running (using the older same ram, so that was not the problem).

Luckily my friend bought the same exact system and his was up and running. I wanted to put the problem to rest, so he installed my CPU into his fully functional system...and guess what?? Error 53. He swapped his CPU back in and it was fully functional. So don't be afraid to assume your CPU has failed (or also the 2nd RMA one you got is also broken) if you have tried multiple Motherboards all with error 53.

Peace
