I updated from 2202 to 3007 this morning with the EZ Update Utility. It installed, then restarted into BIOS and applied the update successfully. It then failed to boot after restart. I then reset again and the system posted in safe mode with an American Megatrends BIOS recovery screen. The only option was to press F1, and run setup. I pressed that and it took me back into my ASUS UEFI BIOS Utility and said I was running BIOS 3007.

Whatever changes I made and saved, after restarting, boot would fail. The keyboard wasn't even powered and nothing would appear on the screen at all. Only upon reset after this blank boot does it post in safe mode, allowing access to EUFI BIOS. So I proceeded to remove the CMOS battery, restore to defaults in BIOS, enable and disable settings such as CSM (Compatibility Support Module) and updating to BIOS 3301. 3301 was only released 7 days ago according to the ASUS website, however, the EZ Update Utility updated to 3007. Unforunately 3301 did not change anything. I've tried all of these troubleshooting steps with 3301 too.

I would like to make note that my system has been running absolutely perfectly since the day it was built, until now. Z170-AR with 2202 was perfect. My processor is i5-6600K and GPU is ASUS GTX1070. I also tried 3 different USB drives in order to reinstall 3301 with the EZ Flash 3 utility, in the case there was an error with one.

I remembered that the Z170-AR had a BIOS Flashback, so initially I was satisfied with flashing back to the beautiful 2202. However, when I purchased this motherboard I forgot to read the fine print, ASUS were deceptive by listing this feature for the Z170-AR as it requires a separate card that plugs into the headers. However, the funny thing is, the card appears to be vaporware (hardware that has been advertised but is not yet available to buy, either because it is only a concept or because it is still being written or designed). To be honest, if it's not out now, they don't intend to release it and it was likely a marketing scam. This is not really new technology anymore. I can't even find it on the ASUS e-store.

No BIOS recovery on a $240 AUD motherboard? Are you kidding? It's been 10 to 15 years since Gigabytes dual BIOS, its very strange sitting here with a bricked motherboard from a big brand in 2017.

What else can I try? Should I remove other hardware? If so what is the purpose, out of interests sake? Thank you in advance.

Hey, I have tried 6 or 7 different USB drives formatted in every way, with every different BIOS version (including FAT32). Thanks for the help.

That makes sense. It's a pretty significant oversight though. I'll see if I can get an RMA, may be faster and easier than a chip from the US.

I have completed another 8 or so hours of troubleshooting with no success, for anyone following.

I removed the battery and shorted the CMOS 4 times, with a few hours between each attempt. I then tried 4 different USB drives formatted FAT32 and EXFAT with 3301 and 2202 on each attempt. There was no GPU and keyboard was the only device connected. I also alternated between keyboards. All seemed to be pretty futile.

Was looking at manually overwriting the BIOS, however I got stuck at the write protection and could not work out how to progress further. I saw a few third party options but it's probably beyond my coding ability.

As for the actual BIOS updates beyond 2202, they added support for Kaby Lake CPUs, apparently it doesn't mean that previously supported CPUs are not. All previously supported CPUs are still meant to be supported with this, and later, BIOS releases. Unfortunately something has clearly gone wrong.
