I was wondering whether the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive is compatible with the Asus Z170-E ATX LGA1151. PC Part Picker states it is, however, a PC Part company has stated that I will need an NVMe compatible PCI-e SSD. Just wanted clarification as the NVMe's appear to be double the price for the same storage space.

If not, I'll probably just go with a SAMSUNG 750 EVO 500GB Solid State Drive/SSD to cut down the costs a little.

Thanks muchly.

Solution
you will also cut down the performance by going 750evo.
Your choice of SSD with good performance and reasonable price is:
1. Smasung 850 EVO
2. SanDisk X400
3. Crucial MX300
BTW, there is no advantage of using M.2 version over 2.5" version for those SSDs beside smaller form factor and lack of cables.

as for the support, here is the quote from the specs https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-E/specifications/:
1 x M.2 x4 Socket 3, with M Key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices support (both SATA & PCIE mode)*1

that means you can use both SATA and NVMe M.2 drives in this slot.

Ahhhh, I was under the impression the M.2's are quicker than the 2.5" SSD's, so that's why I was leaning to one. But as they're the same price, I might as well go for the M.2 for convenience.

Regarding the specs, that's exactly what I read and was why I was under the impression that the Samsung 850 EVO M.2 would work. Therefore would you advise that it would be best to stick with the Samsung 850 EVO M.2 as mentioned?

Cheers,
