I have been told by many accounts how modern Skylake processors can benefit from fast memory so I have a question about which chipset to go with. By even more accounts, I am told to buy a Z170 motherboard only if I were to overclock.

Is it really that inappropriate to combine i5-6500 with Asus Z170 Pro Gaming, rather than, say, Gigabyte H170-D3HP, if all I wanted was its fast memory support with Intel XMP profile? (H170 motherboards only support memory speed at 2133mhz)
Speaking of which, is it really that inappropriate to buy a SKU processor (i5-6600K/i7-6700K) if I only wanted a faster base clock (not to overclock it)? I don't know for sure if a faster base clock is more preferable (having heard opinions both on for and against) but if this is what I wanted, are there distinct disadvantages of buying the SKU processor over the regular ones?

Thanks.

The MC (memory controller) in the CPU is what determines what data rates you can run, at spec it's rated to 2133, though many can run much higher. Many still believe the mobo 'makes' that determination, but that went by the wayside when the MC was moved from the mobo to the CPU

Actually with the H170 you can overclock your memory, the Asrock Hyper H170 allow's you to do that.
I'm buiding a rig for a friend next wk with one!
