ASUS Z270-E RGB lighting is bust!

Hello there good people!

I have a problem that I have had for quite a while. I was stupidly playing with connecting the RGB headers from my ASUS Strix Z270-E to a Phanteks RGB LED strip, when I touched two RGB cables together (can't remember which colours, not the 12V), and a disturbing POP with electrical smoke came out of my mobo. Specifically out of a gray cube-like structure and the wire beside it next to a 3D mount:

Now the lighting incorrectly shows colours and can't hold a colour for very long. The LED strip was undamaged (trialed with another PC). I contacted ASUS but was advised to send it back to the retailer for inspection to see if it was covered by warranty. This would likely take a month, which I can't have without my mobo, and would likely not be covered my warranty as it was my fault.

What I'm asking is what have I done, can I repair it from home, can I purchase a replacement part, or is it busted?

Thanks a lot, Oscar

1| You shorted the board while it was operation(powered up) which you never do. If not, I apologize, that's what it read out on your post, that you didn't power down the system and you connected an RGB connector to the board while still live.

2| Nope, you can't do it at home since you're not competent enough to deal with the power delivery of the board. No offence.

3| You will need to initiate that RMA and hope they cover you for a damage you've done. After that, vow to not do the same thing again.
Some people are denied an RMA on grounds of doubt alone, in the country I'm residing.

Thank you for replying Lutfij, you would be correct that the board was powered on. Unfortunately if an RMA is required I, don't think I would do one because I need my mobo, which would likely be gone for a month. Living in NZ, I don't know how RMAs work to be honest and whether ASUS would accept the fault under warranty.
