In my attempt to troubleshoot why the asus z790-v BIOS wasn't reading my Sata HDD, I install a working one from another pc.
When that didn't register in bios, I returned it to the original pc. NOW it won't read the hdd..like it's been bricked by the asus mobo.

Any ideas what has happened?

CSM was.enabled on the asus z790.
Use uefi (was able to install win 10) on m.2 ssd

Sorry for the late response -- I thought the same but two M.2 SSD worked fine as well as a SATA SSD,
I did use two different cables and made sure it was inserted properly.
I went to a repair shop to see if they could figure out what the power issue was, but no luck. He alluded to the fact that it was moved around, and being a mechanical drive it didn't survive the disconnect/reconnect.
These drives were 6 years old and hummed along in my old pc build. I lost 2TB of data just moving these drives to my new PC build.

I'll accept his possible explanation as the only reasonable one at this point.
