Hello. I recently built a new computer and it works fine except for one tiny annoyance. If my computer needs a restart i have to shut it down and turn it on with the power button. Rebooting the computer the normal way turns the computer off, then turns the power on but stops at the CPU. The CPU LED is solid red. I have googled the problem but haven't found anyone else who has had the same problem. Many problems with a red CPU LED, but none are related to rebooting the computer.

This isn't the end of the world, but it would be nice to be able to press the Restart Now button whenever I update windows or install something that requires a reboot.

Any ideas?

Here are my specs in case it helps:

Chassi - Fractal Design Define R5 - Black Pearl
PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 750W
MoBo - ASUS Z87-A ATX / Z87
RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz
CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K
GPU - Gainward GeForce GTX 960 2GB PhysX CUDA
SSD - Kingston 120GB SSDNow V300 SATA3 - 450/450 MB/s / 85k IOPS

When I try to update to 2103 I get this message:

NS4Pud7.png

I have installed Intel ME but it doesn't seem to think so?

Well now I have the latest BIOS version, which I guess is good. Sadly it made no difference when it comes to my problem.

Well... The CPU works fine. Everything works fine. Until I reboot. That's whats so strange.

I guess I can live with this if there is no solution.

I have almost the same set up with 2 computers that I just built. The are both stopping good on the reboot. All fans left on and the cpu light is also red.

One of the restart if I I
Hit the reset the other must be shut down by holding down the power button.

Hope that there was a fix.

Thanks for the help.

Sadly, no. I just manually shut down and boot my computer whenever it needs a reboot. I never press any "restart now" buttons. It's not really a big deal to me anymore, I'm used to it.

It would be convenient though if someone did find a solution to this, seeing as there are other people with the same parts and the same problem.

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and have never answered a question before but I think I might be able to help.

I had the same problem with my i7 4790k on a Maximus VI Gene, Q Code 00 and CPU_LED red but only when restarting the computer. First of all, it's not a hardware problem; you don't need to check connections or the cpu socket.

It's a BIOS problem. Now, the ASUSTeK support page shows all the BIOS updates. At first I updated to the latest BIOS version (1603 for the Gene), but the problem was still there. Then, I downloaded the latest version that includes the BIOS 4th gen processor updater (which is 1505 for the gene). I downloaded Intel ME Driver version 9.5.15.1730, link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23276/Intel-ME-Management-Engine-Driver

I launched the updater, which downgraded the BIOS to 1505, but the problem was solved. My computer restarts perfectly. So I looked at the BIOS updates for your Z87-A and recommend that you downgrade your BIOS to 2005, because it comes with the updater. Don't use ASUS Easy Flash 2 Utility because It'll update your BIOS, but it wont launch the updater, which is what allows the 4th gens to work.

There are no instructions or readme files for the BIOS 4th gen processor update, which is ridiculous, so here is a step by step.

1.
Download 2005 BIOS update with 4th Gen Processor update from here:
http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/Z87A/HelpDesk_Download/

2.
Unzip, then unzip the zip inside (the bios 4th gen updater)

3.
Launch update.exe. When it says "select BIOS file" point it to the .CAP which is in the first zip file.

And that's it. Please respond if this works, I'd love to know that I helped. Sorry for the rambling solution. 😀

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was so worried this was a hardware problem, but rolling back the bios using the updaters managed to make everything work! I really appreciate it man, now I know all my components work great! Loving my new PC!

You are a lifesaver, I have spent the last 4 hours trying to figure out this problem. I updated the BIOS using EZ Flash and thought I had bought a lemon. This just did the trick, THANKS A LOT !!!!!

Rapha1 I simply cannot thank you enough for solving this problem for me. It's been about a year since this issue has been occurring and I had simply given up after every possible solution I could think. Flashing bios to 1603, modifying bios settings, reseating connections, multiple clean installs of windows..And then I somehow stumbled upon this. Now I deal with this annoyance no longer. What a lovely Christmas present you have given me. THANK YOU. 😀. Also I'm sure OPPO is no longer around but it would totally help to mark this thread as SOLVED. Makes finding solutions much easier.

I've get on a used 4690s i5 in a new asus motherboard with new ddr3s... Just thinking that processor or motherboard (or both) were broken on the reboot/restart (by software or by push button was the same... PC blocked and black screen !!!).

Thanks so much. Great Help !!!

Hi all,

The intel link that rapha1 provided is no longer available, looks like Intel doesn't keep older versions on their server anymore.

Not to worry, you can use this link in order to install the ME Driver version 9:
https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/l...river-9-5-52-1940-for-Windows-10-64-bit.shtml

Even though it's for the Sony VAIO brand, you'll still be able to install the ME Driver w/o any issues.
