asus Z87 pro software and bios update?

So i went to the website and found some cool sounding files that i could download to update my motherboard softwares i guess. There were the smart connect technology, and the rapid start technology.

I downloaded them and extracted them and try to run them but neither of them works? They just said failed or the system doesn't meet the minimum requirement? whatever that means.

I built this computer in august. i just installed everything from the cd and that's it. So i thought maybe my bios was old. I went to the bios drop down menu and found that they just released a new bios updater especially for intel 4th gen processors. I have an i5 4670k. so i downloaded that and try to run it, it wants me to find the bios file. I have no idea what it even is. I did some digging and most people said not to mess with updating bios unless i need to.

I'm just so confused with all these problems. Could someone spare a few minutes and help me out with my quandry please?

Like he mentions, make sure you are not overclocked. Also the update will likely cause you to lose any saved overclocking settings if you have any. It's for an 1155 and yours is 1150, so don't follow that part literally. This just gives you a good visual of how everything should look but just apply it to your particular board. That should do it! There are 2 schools of thought on the bios. One, is if it isn't broken then don't fix it. On the other hand, some of us like to always have the latest and greatest but newer isn't always better. For example, some people update bios and never had problems but now the computer randomly restarts, hangs, crashes, and or gets bsod. That would scare most anyone who isn't an expert. For these reasons many are hesitant to recommend just updating the bios. Conversely, if you do update the bios with the intent to use newer software that's generally a good idea as most developers are working with the latest or most common bios (that depends too but that's another discussion). Anyhow, the safest thing is to have a saved copy of your current bios on a dedicated usb stick (this applies to newer mobo's and since you are running a haswell chip it's safe to assume yours is new enough to flash bios). The reason being is that while you may be gaining the compatibility advantage of the new software, for reasons stated earlier you want to be able to revert to your previous bios in the event that your particular system doesn't play well with the new bios. It's really easy to update just hard to go backwards if you aren't prepared. If you are ready then it's no big deal. Just keep this in mind when you go to update. Most people have usb sticks lying around or you can get a new cheap one easily for this purpose. Hope that clears it up! Have fun!

the last bios updater has to run in windows. there a 32 and 64 bit batch file in the unzipped files. myself i would just make sure you have 1707 bios installed by using the usb flashback port. if there a new bios that drops it going to be a .cap file.
the other two software is used for ssd software. one is used for when ssd is used as a cache drive to a main hard drive.
the only driver you need to make sure that updated is intel chipset driver and the intel mei drivers.

i would suggest you to carry your motherboard manual for extra care you can take of your motherboard while following any new step.
Anyway, to update your bios, you have to download bios file from the same website for your motherboard. After you have downloaded, extract the file and keep it somewhere safe. Now when you are asked to find bios file, just go to the specific location and choose the file you have extracted. It will automatically update your bios.
Don't forget to backup your current bios version, just in case something goes wrong.

@smorizio: i'm running windows, but i don't see those 2 batches of files that you mentioned. when i extracted the files it has a bios folder a resource folder and below it an update file along with other files, all these in one main folder and that's it.
Also, I have an ssd and that's the only hard drive i have because that's all i need and i like the speed. so which one of those 2 should i install?

@brarboy: that's actually where i'm stuck on. i extracted the files and there isn't a .cap files. i tried searching for it but i found a bunch and none of them has a file name that really made me think it's the right one.

there called ver.bat and ver64.bat. but I would not touch that update with a 10 foot pole.. there no .cap file in that update so I dont know what it doing to update your bios. I would only use the bios file below that one if your bios needs to be updated. I have the asus sabertooth and I did not install eather of those drivers as there not needed for ssd. just the updated intel chipset driver. rst driver more for raid setups.

Now my question is how do i backup my current bios version? Can i just install the bios files from the cd again if i decide to come back? I have a feeling the answer is no because that's too easy considering you guys said it's hard to go back. so how do i go about this?

I find it easiest to just download the latest bios, unzip (extract) and save it to a usb file. Connect to the usb to the usb port dedicated for flash bios. Restart cpu, hit del until I go into advanced bios, sift through it and find where you can select the flash bios option (I forget the exact wording atm) and just let it update from there. Save and exit and check with dxdiag. Anything funky happens, repeat with previous bios. I'll see if I can find the video I watched back in the day when I first was learning how to do it like this.
But like smorzio and barboy said, make sure you get the right bios by going to ASUS, select your correct version of windows and you should be good to go!

and save the previous version you have as well as the newest onto the usb stick you will be dedicating this to. Remember the version numbers. You can winkey+r dxdiag to see which version you have.

The video would be helpful because all these terms are so unfamiliar to me haha. i'm just trying my best to learn as much as i can. And by easier do you mean that what you suggested as well as the bios updater that asus has available both work? so it's just a preference?

Also, what is flashback or whatever that is? i remember reading it in the manuel and i tried to understand it but it's just too technical. I couldn't really figure out what it was.

Ah i see. i like the dxdiag feature. tells me exactly what i was looking for. my bios version is 1007. the oldest one they have for this motherboard.

You can recover the BIOS by following:
To recover the BIOS from the support CD :
a.) Turn on the system.
b.) Insert the motherboard support CD into the optical drive.
c.) The utility displays the following message and automatically checks the CD for the BIOS file.

When found, the utility reads the BIOS file and starts flashing the corrupted BIOS file.

( Note : DO NOT shut down or reset the system while updating the BIOS! Doing so can cause system boot failure! )
d.) Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process.

Or just download the current version from asus website and keep it on flash drive 😀

That brings another question, it's mentioned a lot that you can put a bios version on your flashdrive. so if i was to go back to the older version and i have the older version on the flash drive, how do i install the older version from the flash drive? do i just plug it in after i power up my computer and the computer will detect it itself? and by having the older version, you mean to have the .cap file right?

To recover the BIOS from a USB flash disk.
a.) Insert a USB flash disk that contains the BIOS file to the USB port.
b.) Turn on the system.
c.) The utility will automatically checks the devices for the BIOS file. When found, the utility reads the BIOS file and starts to flash the corrupted BIOS file.
d.) Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process.
( Note : DO NOT shut down or reset the system while updating the BIOS! Doing so can cause system boot failure! )

Oh right I didn't realize that was referring to that haha.

Ok one last one, I just installed some stuff like the MEI chipset drivers, etc. Once i update my bios, do those new drivers still take effect? or do I have to reinstall them again?

1. Unzip and extract. 2. Copy and paste it all into the usb stick. 3. Connect 4. Restart, follow the video. Save both the newest and the oldest versions. Use only the newest version now. When all is done, safely remove your usb and keep it handy. Your mobo should have a specific usb slot port for this stick:

you don't have to reinstall anything after updating your bios. Everything remains as it is in the Operating System.
