Hi, I have recently bought parts to assemble my first build which is shown below ( I am a pretty hardcore gamer).

CPU Intel Core i7-4790K

FAN CM Hyper 212 EVO

MOBO ASUS Z97 PRO LGA 1150

GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 980

RAM Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB

SSD Samsung 840 EVO 250GB

HDD Western Digital Blue 1 TB

CASE CM Storm Stryker

PSU Seasonic M12II-850

ODD Samsung 24x SATA

As you can imagine this cost me a fortune and as a student I can't afford to buy another motherboard so I really hope it's not dead.

So to start with the mobo worked ok, I had it in the case connected to all parts and installed windows ok but then the computer suddenly turned off and kept rebooting itself before just not turning on at all.

I've now taken the mobo out and have just one stick of ram and the CPU installed and connected it to the psu. When I power on the psu, the red led on the power light comes on so that would suggest there is power getting to the mobo ok so the psu is ok but then when I press the button with the led on to power up the mobo nothing happens.

I have connected the speaker but it makes no sound and have even removed cooler tower from on top of CPU and connected fan separately so that it should power but it doesn't.
I have also tried the flashback bios reset and have removed and replaced the cmos battery (not with a new battery) for a hard reset but still nothing.

Please help as I am at my wit's end with it.

Thanks in advance,
John

Update:
Have replaced CMOS battery to no avail.
Have carried out paperclip test on PSU bit PSU seems to have non-standard setup... Using pins 16 and 17 as one would usually doesn't do anything but trying another pair fired up the fan so there is life in the psu but it's not necessarily perfect.
One thing I have now noticed is that when I attempt to power up motherboard the PSU clicks but nothing else happens, what could this mean?
Please help someone I can't afford to have to call an engineer out.
John

I have almost the exact same build (except the SSD and the GPU) and have the same problem. I assembled the computer, everything was running fine. I installed the OS, the drivers and everything, suddenly the pc shuts down and won't turn on. I see the red light on on the motherboard but nothing happens when I hit the power button. Made the paperclip test as well and the PSU fan worked. I've been trying to find a solution. Nothing yet. I feel your pain bro!

Out of interest which slots did you use for the psu test? Was it pins 16 and 17 near to and on same side as the hole with no pin?
Also I am worried if the psu has fried the mobo then is the processor ok?

I'll order a new PSU because even with the fan starting doesn't mean the PSU is working properly. I hava a XFX 550W Bronze PSU. I'll get a Corsair CX Series 750 Watt since it is more reliable. @stibi15 Regarding the cables i double checked all the power connectors everything was properly connected. I'm afraid the motherboard fried, ill get a new one too and recheck everything. @Sorax1 Please share any news information you have i'll do the same.

Hey,
I have since visited a good friend of mine with some voltage measuring equipment and turns out it was the psu not outputting correct voltages, sent it back and got a new one and all is up and running.

Wow man! You don-t know How happy you I am to hear this. I]ll just buy a new PSU now, since sending it back would cost me a lot more. When I test it I'll say something.
