Question Asus Zenbook Ryzen7, problem with USB unrecognised and freezing windows.

Hi all,

I recently bought a Zenbook Oled with a Ryzen 7 cpu, model UM3406H.

Since day one after finishing install, most (but strangely not all) my USB devices, both USB sticks and external hard drives, are not recognised and do not appear in the Winfdows file explorer.

I have used these USB devices for years, and they are recognised on other computers

Once any of them is plugged in, the computer stops responding properly and I cannot even turn it off.
When I do the usual the "turn off" procedure in windows, nothing happens.
Ctrl+Alt+Del also does not respond most of the time.

Sometimes Paragon Disk Manager does open, and the USB devices do appear in the drive list, but not in the Windows file manager and when I try to format them or delete a partition, it freezes at 30% of the task.

I disabled the energy saving options for USB in the device manager but nothing changes.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening??

Thanks in advance
Raph

Understood. Makes me wonder if those ports are defective/damaged internally. Do they appear loose in any way? Are the ports from from debris?

To verify a hardware issue, boot with a Live Linux USB drive (assuming it gets detected properly) to see if the same issue presents itself under Linux. This will not impact your current Windows installation.

Thanks, will try that!

Hi!

I tested the laptop with Fedora on a USB stick and all USB ports work just fine.

I even used a USB hub with 5 USB devices plugged in, all were mounted properly and transfers worked fine.

So I guess it's coming from my Windows installation on my Zenbook.
Weird thing is, it's a relatively fresh install, the laptop is just a few months old, bought new.

I installed the latest AMD drivers and the pc is up to date.

The strangest thing was that after using my USB devices on my fawlty laptop Windows, the USB devices also started behaving erraticly on my desktop computer.

I am wondering whether the whole issue comes from a Windows update about a month ago, as I have spoken to a few people who have been experiencing the same issue since about the same time.

I might switch back to Windows 10 to avoid the same issue with Windows 11...
Or maybe try linux.

Anyway thanks a lot for the Linux suggestion!
