I just purchased the following graphics card: Asus's AMD Radeon™ HD 7770 DirectCU.

I installed this card. It went inside the system with no problems (system specs below), physically. But when it came time to reboot the system, it started with stripes or bars on the screen. It started for a few seconds and then the screen went black and never came back on.

Now prior to this, I was using a Geforce GT 440. I uninstalled the Nvidia software, etc... turned off the system. Installed the new card. That's when the problem started. So, needless to say, I took out the Radeon and reinstalled the Geforce card.

What did I do wrong?

hey,

I'm no expert but I just "upgraded" to win8 ... AMD catalyst drivers were a big problem, ... u might want to look into that. Seems like a few people are having trouble with catalyst esp if running dual vid brds. An earlier ver driver might help u.

I almost had the same problem because I was using nvdia before I switched to amd.

Install the nvdia card and drivers as you did. Download a driver cleaner, not sure of what version it is now just google it. Uninstall you nvdia driver, restart if prompted, use the driver cleaner, restart again if prompted. Try to run the cleaner again if there are no more left overs shutdown the pc. Install hd 7770, install drivers (problems may occur like "Mom.exe could not start") just update the ".net thingy" and update here whats gonna happen.
