Hey guys,

I am having problems with my computer currently. I have no idea what the cause is (be it hardware or software related) but it is driving me mad.

About 2 months ago I purchased a GTX 780 so that I could play games at high settings with good fps.

Ever since I have installed it I have encountered a problem that is driving me up the wall.

Whenever I play a first person shooter (happens in other games too and even video playback). I get this "jittery" kind of effect, almost like micro-screen tear. It's hard to explain, when I move my mouse across my mouse mat it's almost as if it's skipping pixels or something. It makes no difference whether I have all the settings on low, everything turned off, the same problem is happening.

At this point in time I have tried 5 different mice and about 3 or 4 different mouse mats (hard and soft) and the problem persists.

I tried reinstalling drivers (using DDU and even going into the registry and deleting everything). The problem still persists.

Monitored temperatures and loads, everything seems fine. Getting just over 60C on GPU (highest i've seen it go was 66) and about 40-50C on my CPU.

Take for instance Battlefield 4 (where this problem is most prolific). I will have an FPS of between 70-120 but it feels more like 20 or 30fps because of this jittery mouse movement. It's not just in Battlefield 4 it's in pretty much every single other game.

I am reaching out to you guys because I'm honestly at the end of my sanity. I saved my ass off for over a year to build this thing and I would have been better off just buying one of the new consoles (considering the amount I spent to build this thing I probably would've been able to buy a new TV too!!)

Here are my specs:

Windows 8.1 64-bit (fully updated as of time of writing this post)

AsRock Z77 Extreme 4 (with latest BIOS)

i5-3570k @ stock (was previously 4.4ghz but I removed the over clock as I thought that might be the problem)

Asus GTX 780 3GB DirectCU II @ stock (never tried overclocking, only a couple of months old)

8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600Mhz

Sandisk Extreme II SSD 128GB

Standard Toshiba 1TB HDD

XFX Pro Core Edition 650W PSU

Steelseries Sensei Raw w/ 4HD mouse mat (previous mice I have tried: Logitech G400s/G500s/G300, Roccat Kone XTD)

Coolermaster Trigger keyboard

I'm thinking if it's a hardware-related problem (which is highly likely), then it could be my PSU or my motherboard....

I'm dying here guys, had this problem for about 2 months now. If you want to help me and need any more info just ask me.

Thanks :)

Yeah of course, I've actually got some footage recorded of it on my computer. The only annoying thing is, is that because YouTube effects the quality so much it's almost impossible to notice it (must be the 30fps limit or something).

I will upload a video to YouTube just now and post it (dunno how long it'll take).

I was actually thinking that it could be monitor-related. The monitor I am currently using to game is a Samsung S24B300H (60hz).

Thanks for your reply :wahoo:

What screen are you using . . . . are you games set with V-sync enabled or not ? - sorry just noticed its a Samsung in your other post. If you have your older video cards put them in and see if problem persists, Your PSU is in theory okay but I recently put in and 850W PSU in my own rig although in theory I need a lot less. The problem is there could be something wrong with one of the components and the only way to really narrow the problem down is by replacing the suspected components one at a time. Have you tried switching the graphics card into different slots

I upgraded to the GTX 780 from an HD7870 but from memory I don't actually think I had any of these issues with that card (just framerate issues). Once this video is uploaded I will switch out the cards and see what happens.

I don't enable V-sync in any of my games (especially first person shooters) because it creates horrendous input lag that I can't handle. It doesn't even solve the problem anyway.

I didn't realise you could switch the GPU into different slots and it would still work. Should I attempt to move it into a different PCI-E port and see what happens?

Thanks for your replies guys. Nice to see that there are people willing to help out there and not just say "ur pc sux lol"

Also try a DVI cable as well as HDMI . . . . finding solutions can involve a lot of trial and error. Do you have latest drivers loaded. Do you have any programs that monitor the temperature of your hardware (CPU & GPU) such as Speedfan to check everything is within limits. I am assuming you have all the power supply connections to your GPU plugged in properly. Sorry to go over the obvious but its a process of elimination. Ne hardware can be faulty - Ive built many computers and had faulty MBs PSUs, RAM . . . although no bad graphics cards yet . . .

I don't get any framerate lag whatsoever really on Battlefield 4 (have my settings on high). If I only use the WASD keys to walk about everything is fine, it's when I move my mouse that it starts to get all jittery. I'm starting to think it may be either the GPU or the CPU. I removed my CPU cooler (H100i), replaced the thermal compound and re-attached it just in case that was a problem. The GPU is literally less than 2 months old (about a month and 2 weeks), so it's still under warranty...

Do you have the correct drivers for your mouse and is its report rate set high enough - try plugging into a different USB port . . . btw sometimes official drivers, especially new releases can cause problems . . .  Ive had to roll back drivers because of issues with the most recent versions. Theres a lot to be said for if its not broke dont fix it - and my punctuation is bad because of some inexplicable reason my keyboard just changed to French characters!

I've tried an DVI cable (although my monitor only has VGA + HDMI so I had to use an adapter), but it changed pretty much nothing, tried 2 or 3 different HDMI cables also had no effect. I have the latest Nvidia drivers installed (337.50) and have also tried rolling back to see if it makes a difference (got as far back as 322.whatever before I gave up). I've even fully reinstalled Windows to eliminate all software-related problems whatsoever, did that about a week and a half ago. I fully disconnected the GPU, reseated and reconnected the PCI-E connectors from the PSU (didn't know you could try different slots at the time, though). Used HWMonitor/GPU-Z to monitor temperatures/voltages whilst playing games and idle. GPU idles at around 28-30C and peaks at around 60-65C and the CPU idles at about 25-30C and gets to about 45-50C while playing, checked the voltages with google and everything seemed A-OK.

This looks like a hardware issue. Any chance you could get it checked out by a specialist?
Oh BTW I was kidding. Your PC kicks ass.
I would not stay up till 12 at night to fix someone's cruddy PC.

I have my DPI set at 800 with a polling rate of 1000hz, tried lowering the polling rate to 500hz but didn't notice a single bit of difference. Admittedly I haven't installed any drivers for this Steelseries mouse yet, maybe I should go to the website and do that just now. This trigger keyboard is the worst thing I have ever owned, I have to plug in a second keyboard whenever I want to enter the BIOS because the trigger takes too long to boot up! That's with fastboot disabled in the BIOS lol.

Haha. To be honest I wouldn't trust anywhere where I'm from if they claimed they were a specialist. There aren't many computer shops around here and the ones that do exist would probably try and rip me off somehow.

So this is me back from switching my 780 from PCI-E 1 to PCI-E 3 (2 and 4 are regular PCI slots).

I started up Windows and it wasn't reading the 780 for several minutes and then it finally kicked in.

I started up Battlefield 4 and as soon as I joined a round was instantly greeted with a DirectX error. Just tried it again in PCI-E 1 slot and never got an error after about 10 minutes of playing.

Dunno what that means lol....

on the monitor, is there a configuration menu? maybe there is a video mode for gaming that has higher refresh rates or is designed for gaming. or the card could be bad, have you tried to return that one and replace it with the same card?

I think its either the card or the pcie slot you use. I suggest professional assistance at your local PC repair shop. Sorry I couldn't help, but it looks like this is a hardware issue provoked by dust or a broken connection.
Cheers

I can confirm that the issue persists with the AMD card in the computer. I don't know what else I can do. I have tried to look for legitimate PC repair places in my city but to tell you the gods honest truth I wouldn't trust them with anything.

So this leaves me with another problem. What (in your opinion) should I replace first to see if the problem goes away? The PSU? CPU? GPU? Motherboard? I don't really earn that much money so I can only replace a single thing at a time. I doubt I'll even be able to afford a new CPU or GPU within the coming months, although I'm 100% certain it is NOT the GPU that is causing the problem. It's something else... I know for a fact that it's not the monitor as I've tried it with a different one and the problem was still there so there's definitely something wrong internally with this computer. This makes me sad :(

I suggest you replace your motherboard. Can you list the model?
