I dont know if this is the right place to post this problem. There are some well know issues with windows me/98 and ata 100 drives (esp the larger ibm deskstars and fast high cahce drives). You have stated on many occasion that this problem does not affect windows 2000, i think that i may have encountered some occurences of where these fast machines (900 Mhz+) casues drive corruption on shut down. if you are interested in knowing the details please contact me. below is part of a post i recently posted on a bulletin board. The problem with most of the public bulletin boards is that serious windows 2000 systems are not really discussed compared with win 98/me.
Hope you could shed some light on some issues ive had iwth MSI k7t pro2a/ata100 systems. Ive built about 20 of these systems all running about 900 to 1000 Mhz -All running windows 2000 sp1, via 4-1 4.28(beta + final - since this is the only one that supports the ata 100 via controller) using IBM DLTA deskstar drives and the new quantum fireball ata100 7200 rpm.
The problem i have. On a couple of systems - the windows 2000 installations are becomming corrupt (not being able to boot - corrupted profiles), after a few weeks of use. ive checked various forums and i am not so sure what to believe - does windows2000 support ata100?? with the via 4-1 4.28 (released at viahardware). I am using the latest via chipset driver from 4.25 to 4.28 and the microsoft pre released patch (from sp2).
I feel that windows 2000 is still shutting down too fast. SOmetimes the system reboots with the error that drives need to be checked - in stome instances the drives become corrupt with out being able to recover. and other instances messages upon reboot to windows that drive c has become corrupted even windows 2000 has fully booted. In some instances the active desktop recovery (white screen) has come up implying that windows was shut down improperly.
I know that windows 2000 is supposed to not to have this problem – but I suspect that there is a similar problem with these machines –
Windows 2000 sp1 with/without msft patch (see below)
File system – ntfs
Memory – pc 133 mushkin performance cas 2 memory
Motherboard/chip set: Msi k7t pro 2a ata100 via chipset (686b)
Athlon tbird 900 and 1000 Mhz
IBM deskstar dtla ata 100 7200 rpm, 2mb, 20 GB to 45 GB
QUANTUM fireball plus as ata100 7200 rpm (similar to above)
Via chipset driver 4.28 final, Microsoft ata 100 patch (q260233_W2K_SP2_x86_en.EXE)
Systems that had ata 66 disks never experienced this problem
