Here's the setup I have (or will have when it gets build...replacing my bum mobo right now)

XFX 6600GT AGP 8x vid card
1 gig corsair ram
80 gig SATA hd
athlon 2600+ barton

do you think that the proc is going to be a bottleneck there? I was thinking of OCing it to 3000+ speeds...I'm hoping to run things like half-life 2, far cry, doom 3...etc.

what the word on the street?

looking at benchmarks of the 6600GT with a 2600+ and only 512mb of ram, it looks like I'll be fine for hl2. this reviewer was getting 40-50 fps on 1024x768 on with everything on high. the 6600GT was the best card I could afford. I'm trying to build a gaming comp for under $500, and I think I did pretty well. it looks like it'll play most new games fairly well.

funny that I don't need or want a state of the art video card...if I can get 35-40 fps on hl2 on decent setting, I don't care if it's a commodor 64....seeing how this video card is the single most expensive item I've ever bought, and it gets consistantly good reviews with doom 3 and hl2, I think i'll do fine.

I agree with Wusy. It would play those games fine, but you would probably be happier with the 754. The thing is, there will be better and better games coming out and you will want them. My 9800 pro and XP 3000 play those game fine, but BF2 struggles at times on medium settings. Games are going to require better and better systems as time goes by.

no doubt, but I have other things to pay for, like college. I cant be breaking my bank just for an entertainment device...
