Does anyone know why this system could be laggin'. It's acting really sluggish on boot, slow to open programs, just general delays with all programs and windows. It is far slower than my old Athlon XP 2600.

Athlong 64 3500+
Asus AV8 Deluxe
2 120Gig Segate's RAID 0 (with onboard promise IDE)
ATI Radeon 9800PRO 128
Audigy 2
Win XP Professional

ANY IDEAS?????

I don't know if your rigs a homebuild or a store bought. Some things you could do though...

1. Check bios, flash if necessary...

2. Check ram timings make sure optimized...

3. Defrag and disk clean.

4. Eliminate unecessary programs started at start-up.

5. Do the same for processes started on start-up.

6. Check for all the latest vid and mobo drivers etc...

Cnet has a good guide for speeding up your Windows XP. I followed it and my machine's smokin'....

Apart from being an Asus board with VIA chipset, which you can do nothing about it, you might try to check to update the BIOS, as it might update the promise BIOS too and update the Promise drivers with the latest.

Then, did you install the latest 4in1 VIA drivers?

If all fail, get something else than Asus...with nforce3 of 4 chipset.

Well, first off, don't listen to pat...it sounds like he's havingsome sort of bad day that makes him make unsubstatiated blanket statements about other people's hardware...(/preach).

I just made the same upgrade, (from an XP to a 64 with the ASUS AV8). I haven't had any major problems yet. I agree with the Wharfster in that a minimum amount of start programs will make it faster, but that's kind of a no brainer. It is very difficult to rmote troubleshot this type of problem.....BUT...soyware could be taking up cycles, if you don't already, download and install spybot, and adware. Malware will always slow down your computer. memory setting could be a problem, but they are not going to affect the 'slugish' feeling you are getting tooling around windows. Check your power management settings and make sure they didn't default to something ridiculous like 'shut down harddrives after 3 mins'. My computer runs like crap unless I keep the drives spinning all the time.

Beyond these things and what wharf has suggested, I don't know what else to tell you.

If an argument can't be settled in one or two paragraphs, perhaps you're anal and should just let it go...

Newsflash: Creative and Via drivers don't get along very well. Make sure you are up to date on BIOS and drivers.

You failed to list that in your specs.

Then in that case, maybe moving around the Sound blaster card might help...

That the first time I hear that, so that might help in his case... I knew about sound blaster and VIA problems with PCI bus, but not because of the drivers.
