Athlon 64 AM2 3500+ Running Hot HELP!!!

I just built a new AM2 rig, the heatsink fit on so tight that I couldn't even latch it. So I used a 939 heatsink and it worked perfectly, However when I boot the temperature goes up to around 60-65C or more. Is that normal for those CPU's or is the CPU bad?

I don't own any AM2 products or 939, but is it possible that the HSF is on the wrong way?

It should latch properly, with out too much of a fuss. Or in other words it should be a snap?

And a 939 HSF shouldn't be used on a AM2 setup, from what I remember.

The other unexpected aspect is that existing HSF combos that many people have enjoyed using and upgrading from socket 754, 940, and 939 models will no longer work with AM2; a new HSF will be required to cool your next-gen AMD processor. While this will be of no concern to those who buy boxed CPUs with HSF combos within, those who buy the less expensive processors at trade shows and through local shops will now have to fork over an extra US$40+ for a compatible HSF combo. Compared to the price of moving from your current 940-pin AMD64 product with DDR up to a new 940-pin AM2 product with DDR2, it should be minor.

I'd complain to either the retailer or ASUS or both. That is like your HD plug not fitting.

I can't speak to the AM2, but the 939 stock heatsink was a stone bear to install. You really have to do it outside the case, where you can get a good grip. It requires a surprising amount of force. It may be that the 939 heatsink is failing to make good contact with the processor. You might want to consider a 3rd party heatsink, if you'd rather not attempt installing the AM2 stock one.

Seems it just requires quite a bit of force to latch. This is where a removeable motherboard tray comes in handy.

Would depend on how much you want to spend, and what is available in your area, or the sites that will ship to your area.

Or if you just want the best, even if your paying for its name, rather what it can do for ya.

My 939 went on without much trouble. Again, the heatsink isn't made for the mobo socket clips it's the other way around.

silly question: Did you put thermal paste on top of the CPU?

I am no thermal paste expert - maybe someone else could give you a more thorough answer.... I always make sure there is just enough to cover the cpu & spread nicely.... You didn't gob it on like tooth paste did you? 😛

That's very odd. My CPU idles in the BIOS around 54C, and I have a dual-core 3800+ AM2 on an M2N-SLI Deluxe. I thought it should be idling in the 30s. I may reseat the HSF this weekend, and I might try putting a little less AS5 on there. I fear I may have put it on too thick or let bubbles stay in the paste.

i own a 3500+ AM2 on a MSI K9N Neo, i've never checked in full load, but in idle it's about 34-36 ºC. stock HSF, of course.
remember that the amount of thermal paste must not be thicker than a piece of paper.
i think AMD HSFs are really hard to install. my advice is you have to install the HSF with the mobo outside the case, on top of a pillow or a matress. then you can apply all the force you want without trouble.

1.Use Arctic Silver5
2.place it as thin and uniform as you can (without scratches or voids)

This way your temps won't go beyond 35/45 idle/loaded.
