I'm getting ready to build an Athon 64 box. I have 512MB of DDR333 sitting around and i was wondering how much of a performance decrease will i see from running an A64 with DDR333 vs the normal DDR400?

You should notice a decrease in performance, but it won't kill you.

Looking at your old system...IT WOULDN'T MATTER if you had the i845G chipset (Integrated Graphics) because it's magically transformed into the i845PE when you insert a graphics card. That is, all the added circuits get turned off.

You have a fairly decent system, I'd save up some money to buy a complete new system and resell the old one complete.

Well here are the particulars of my situation...

My system is a dell dimension 4550. It has only enough space for two hard drives. I need more space and already have 2 drives. I also planned on upgrading to a Pentium 4 3.06GHz HT ($220). I checked out the A64 setup and for $290 i can get the A64 2800+, a mobo, and a new case with lots of room for expansion. Looking at the two options makes me think about the A64 over just poping a new CPU in my system.

I know the integrated graphics turn off when you put in an AGP card but im just trying to make a little joke about how crappy intel integrated extreme graphics are.

160GB drives are under $100 now. You could get a nice 160GB drive and copy your stuff to it.

Seriously, the only thing I'd probably keep out of your system is the video card. I'd probably save enough to replace the entire thing (minus the video card), then sell the entire thing (minus one hard drive and the video card).

You won't lose musch performance, ~5% maybe. I read an AMDZone.com article, where it showed Athlon 64 performance with DDR333 and DDR266 (don't have the link right now)
