Athlon 64

2 quick questions concerning the computer my friend just built.

This may be a very basic question, but here goes...
The Athlon 64 3000 chip came with a foil sticker on the top of it, that states VIOD IF REMOVED. Should you remove this sticker to apply your thermal paste?

Also, he has added this cpu cooler by Swifttech, and he is getting idle temps of about 48c. I was expecting this to be a bit lower. Could this be a result of him living the sticker on, or should his chip be running about this temp, with this cooler?

the 'do not remove' sticker is refering to the metal plating on top of the chip, a.k.a the heat spreader. The sticker which your friend left on will most likly be the cause of the high temps he is experiencing!

You can take the sticker off, his warrenty will still be intact

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that there shouldn't be a sticker between the cpu and the fan, but he was sure that it said not to remove. I have yet to get my AMD 64 chip, so I didn't know what to tell him. Guess he will probably have fun cleaning burt sticker off his chip. Any suggestions for cleaning that wont damamge the chip?

Also, is anyone running the above listed swiftech cooler on their chip? If so, what temps are you getting for Idle and Heavy load?

If your friend is using the msi k8n, he may find that a new bios will fix his temp problem.

Try a non lint cloth (I use an old sock), and 99% alcohol that you get at the pharmacy.

don't get 99 % alcohol my father has a pharmacy and i know that stuff is expensive. Just get normal deinfecting alcohol of 90% or something (99% alcohol is more expensive because it's has to purify it that hard because it attracts water.)

Maybe it's the 90% stuff that I get. It's about a buck for a whole bottle so it's not that expensive.
