So, is it compatible with 970 or 990fx boards? And, is it worth it, will there be any unforeseen consequences if I plug such an old processor into a new mobo.

Solution
To answer succinctly, it -should- be compatible. I had one of these x2 250's and it's really not a bad chip, ran Windows 7 fine, and other OS's as well without issue. As mentioned though, check the compatibility of any board you're going to buy to make sure it's supported by the bios.

It's one easy step and could potentially save you a lot of head scratching.
