Athlon II X4 635 v Phenom II X4 965

How much better are the Phenom II vs the Athlon II? I have an Athlon II 635 @ 3.4GHz, how would it compare to a Phenom II 965 @ 3.8GHz? Would I see any major improvements in games like Starcraft 2, Bad Company 2, Witcher 2 Crysis etc?

Better than the Athlon because it's clocked higher and has a L3 cache

At medium resolutions that are not GPU limited, the differences can be substantial; from approx 120 fps with Athlon II X4 635 to 160 fps with BE965 , a roughly 33% increase in framerate potential. Given the fairly low cost of Phenom BE 965s these days, there is little reason to go with Athlon II.....

I already have an Athlon II X4, I will be selling it on Ebay if I do get the Phenom II..I'm lagging in some games like Starcraft 2 when there is a massive battle going. My GPU is 6870, 8GB RAM and playing at 1680x1050. Would the Phenom II help in anyway? I will be OCing it and try to get to 4.0GHz

I would expect a healthy increase, but, you might want to check out Starcraft II- specific benchmarks before deciding.....

1680x1050? You GPU is screaming for a new monitor 1920x1200. Regarding the CPU question, the Phenom II line comes with L3 cache that is very useful for games.

Here's a Starcraft comparison for a variety of CPUs, you might be able to predict results, assuming your existing MB will support the equivalent of an X4 980 OC'd...(Double check that it will support 125W processors in 980 class first)

Note the X6 variants score well, I would assume the game can utilize more than 3-4 cores resulting in better scaling, but it is still troubling to see the X6 sample only almost equal the dual core i3-2100.....

All saint meant was your GPU is overkill for your resolution. It is likely your cpu holding you back like you think it is
