I'm looking for a work computer which I'll be using for the next 3-4 months and then will be working from home and only need it once a week when I go into the office but need it to last at least 2 years. I purchased the Mwave deal and while I ordered a Intel E5400, they sent me a Athlong X2 245 with a MSI K9N6PGM2-V2 Motherboard instead. So I have the option to send it back but was wondering if I should keep this machine or just build a E5300 with 2GB memory and a Gigabyte board from Newegg? I have a local Microcenter and so I can get the E5300 for $56.
Now I had an Athlon 2100 from a while back and remember a few issues with a few applications not working. Since I'll need this to work with business apps, are these issues non-existent now? I may want to also test out a Hackingtosh and have seen no issues with my Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L board. I've tried once already to install it and haven't had much luck. On the AMD plus side it does have on-board Raid which is a plus, but I have successfully been able to get get a software mirror raid in Windows 7 which the low end Intel boards do not have. The only downside to running the Windows software raid it that should it blue screen or loose power, it takes about 15-20 minutes to snyc the raid and the machine is not usable when this happens.
Just for cost reference, I paid $160 for the case, PSU 2GB memory (one bank), MSI K9N6PGM2-V2 and X2 245. I had to spend $40 for a PSU as the one they sent was extreamly noisy and had purchased a better case before i bought this. A new Intel board , 5300 and 2GB of memory will run me $155. I can also get a E6500 with a Gigabyte GA-41MT-ES2L and 2 GB of DDR3 1333 memory for $203. If I get the E6500 I would drop that in my home office PC which currently has a C2D E6420 chip and then put that in the one for work with the GA-41MT-ES2L. I also don't plan to overclock.
I would love to get an i3-530 but shelling out almost $400 for a trickle down upgrade isn't worth it for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
