Athlon x4 860k vs 845 which is better for a gtx 1050?

Solution
X4-845 is my short answer.

Both will tend to be a CPU bottleneck.

I was going to say the X4-860K, but if Passmark scores are correct the X4-845 is better. Note the SINGLE THREAD performance which is more important:

Looking at power which is lower on the 845, my guess is that this is a slightly reconfigured version of the architecture that is a bit more efficient in processing. The 845 wins in SINGLE THREAD, and at a lower frequency.

Not sure if OVERCLOCKING is an option either, but right now I'd have to say the X4-845.

I'm not sure on that. If Passmark is accurate, then the X4-845 is about 11% faster for single thread.

You'd have to basically overclock the X4-860K to 4.4GHz to get similar performance. That's also going to require a good CPU cooler and motherboard if he doesn't have both already.

So I'm not sure if there's any point to the X4-860K, and either way the CPU fan noise would be a lot lower on the 65W CPU especially if it's not overclocked and the X4-860K is.

I did some more research and your right the 845 is the better choice especially for gaming. long story short I found some benchies done by a reddit user which confirms what your saying, in fact I am not even sure a 4.5GHZ overclock would be enough. The initial numbers i found showed them closer in single thread but in games the 845 wins hands down.
