Athlon XP Barton Sweet Spot

I've dropped out of the enthusiast circle for a while now due to developing web pages and databases (bout 6 months) and there has been a ton of changes in the processor market.

I was wondering what the sweet spot...the best performance for the money...is at right now for the XP Barton (333FSB). The reason being that I need to upgrade my sons computer w/o upgrading the mobo (he has an Abit NF7 2.0). Currently he's running a 2500 333FSB and I was wondering that since prices had dropped...if it would be a good thing to upgrade to say..a 2800. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help!

Better than that... Overclock his current processor! :smile:

The 2500+ Barton <i>is</i> the sweet spot at the moment, because virtually all of them will hit 3200+ speeds.

Oh, and upgrading from a 2500+ to a 2800+ would be next to pointless. Doubt you'd notice any difference.

A MOBILE 2500+ Barton, that is!
I don't believe Barton CPUs for the Desktop are as easy overclockers as the Mobile, but I could be wrong. I base my opinion on widespread views and experiences of other people!
 
I agree that jumping from an XP2500+ to XP2800+ is useless. There is practically no perceptible gain. You need a CPU that will allow you to push the FSB forward (which your board allows). If you are not an overclocking believer, just try a CPU with support for 400Mhz FSB or else, try an overclocked Mobile XP2500+ Barton.
 
The Barton 2500+ has always been a great Oc'ing CPU - the vast majority of non-mobile ones will hit 2.2Ghz at least. The mobile ones are better still of course, because they go higher and need less voltage, but the standard ones are good too.

That's why I said 'virtually all' chips. if I was referring to the mobile chips I would have simply said 'All', as I've not heard of anyone not getting at least 3200+ speeds from <i>those</i>. :smile:

Yep, another vote for overclocking. To make it clear:

XP 2500+ => 166 x 11.0 = 1833
XP 2800+ => 166 x 12.5 = 2083
XP 3200+ => 200 x 11.0 = 2200

So if you increase FSB to 190 you will get 2800+ performance (more or less). Nothing out of order, really easy, no risks involved. Personally I won't spend my money on a new CPU, just overclock a little bit your Barton and you are done. And as some have said, the most likely is that you can go to 3200+ setting without any problem.

I'm not sure why you need to upgrade his PC is it not fast enough? If he is playing games and they are not running good I'd up grade his vid card. Also more ram would help, 512 to 1 gig. Other then that I think the PC would be ok.

I'd overclock the XP2500+. In fact, I would have bought the XP2500+ myself, except that I needed a specific P4 platform for a memory review I did a while back. Heck, I even sold that board as soon as I got another board, free, for another review. With all this free P4 stuff floating around I simply couldn't afford the XP2500+ I was going to overclock.

if you really want a good cpu, i will sell you a new one that will hit 2.7 Ghz

mine does 2780 Mhz stable. did you ever see the pic?

put the thing to 11x200 .... there is no risk doing that...

like i said; sell yours and you will have it for even less than that. the one i sell you will hit 2.7 easy with h2o.
