just after any veiws on this chip really
done a quick search and now they are quite rare and were an oem then a limited amount came on to the market
so whats the crack
are they any good

well it is a chip from the high end two generations ago so it would still be fairly competent at most tasks(the last few generations havent seen as big advances as it might seem YET)
what will you use it for

cheers for the reply
i'm just hopeing to get the last bit of life out of my socket a board
i'm running it with a xp 2400+ and a gforce 6800
and it's pretty quick for what it is
i get 9000 on 3d mark 03
in my unlearned opinion the 266hz of the 2400+ has got to be holding back the graphics card a bit so i've had my eye out for a 400hz cpu for a while, but all the 3000 and 3200+ that come up on ebay are silly money
just hoping to speed up the games a bit

Dude what motherboard have u got ? Unless you have one of the first gen 2400+ it should easily overclock to 3000+ speeds. Socket A still has alot of life left, now that Moore's Law is dead.

well i got the chip and all seems well
it runs up at 2.27 gig (227hz*10) without any temp issues
thats as far as i can turn up the fsb
so whats next are there any recomened programs that can push the fsb futher than a motherboards spec
its a asus a7v880 by the way

and what about unlocking the multiplyer on this sort of chip
i'm not very confident about cutting bridges etc
do those speed strip things work?

Moore's law is not "dead".

You're in that trap of thinking that Moore's Law refers to processor speed... it doesn't... it refers to the number of transistors that can be packed onto a chip.

ok i'm a bit of a newbie
so could you be so kind as to expand on the above

How much is it going to cost? Me and a buddy of mine have done extensive real life benchmarks of the XP 1500, 1700, 1800, 2100, 2400, 2700, 3000, and 2400-M. There was not much difference bewteen the 2400, 2700, and 3000 models. I mean, there is only about a 160 mhz between the 2400 and 3000. I say if you can get the 2900 for a decent price, then what the hell right? But if it is going to cost over 100 bucks then I dont think you will see 100 bucks worth of difference. About your bus speed... I ran my XP-M 2400 at 133 FSB and 166 FSB at like, many combinations of multiplier and FSB. From what I saw (based on real time video encoding which is totally CPU dependant) the FSB boost was worth about 50 mhz give or take a few mhz. It was fun testing all these things out but what I learned wasnt so fun: A system based on an athlon XP (even on the bleeding edge of overclocking etc etc) is still slower than the slowest athlon 64 939. Some of the people may argue the point that an XP-M at 2.5 ghz may be equal or a littel faster, but I dont see the point. Considering you have a 6800GT, I would say you will not see noticeable improvement if you got this XP 2900. Keep what you have and put the money towards a new mobo and CPU. Its time for PCI-e anyways if you ask me.

Or if you can wait, the M2 isn't that far away. See what the prices are like for it, and also its possible the 939 chips will stay on sale, just drop a bit in price.

thanks for the info
i bought my xp 2400 second hand of ebay quite a whle ago
and though it was nice and stable it always ran a little hot, about 55 idle
i could push it up to 140hz but at much beyond that the temps would get silly.
i never really been convinced that the chip was any good

i have got the xp2900, £51 ebay. and it runs idle at 43 @ 227hz
much better me thinks
just hoping for a bios revision (a7v880) that will allow me to push the fsb a bit further lol
i did um an ahh about taking the step up to 939
and did think about doing so but the graphics card is quite new and going for a 939 socket with a agp slot would be daft
buying the whole lot cpu board and graphics card would have got i into big trouble with the wife!!

"A system based on an athlon XP (even on the bleeding edge of overclocking etc etc) is still slower than the slowest athlon 64 939. "

Bingo!

In fact, they are probably slower than the slowest socket 754 Sempron as well....

agreed
but if my money is to be well spent, the longer i leave it before i take the big step up, the more i will get for my money
what costs 500 quid today will only cost 250 in 12 months time
so i will put up with my xp based system for as long as seems feasible
and when the day comes that i cant play the games at an acceptable frame rate i will go and spend the money.
i have just finished f.e.a.r and could run that at 70 frames with most of the details high. and that was on the 2400+
don't get me wrong if i had the disposable income to do it today i would!!
and i am deffinatly a bit jealouse of some of the systems that are out there
in the same way i realise that i will never afford a ferrari (i have got a ducati though, thats why i'm skint)i know i'll always be a few steps behind the leading edge in the computer world

Er... do you even know what the definition of Moore's Law is?

In a nutshell he stated that the number of transistors on a CPU would double every 2 years (some argue he said 18 months, but whatever).

Since he stated that, his "law" has remained true.

Dont sweat it bother. You just do what you need to do till its time to buy. I stuck with the XP until now. I have no regrets. I would have an AGP based winchester if I had bought when I did, Instead I dropped $125 on the XP-M 2400 and an asus mobo. Once I get my X2 3800, I am going to turn that XP-M into a video encoding pig. All it will do in encode video. Plus you dont want to make the wife mad. "daft?" "Quid?" "Skint?" You Brits are freaking AWESOME! I wish I could go someday.

**Bows** Why thank you... Of course, we already know that over here 😉 But you don't really want to come over here. The weather's crap. You can drive somewhere warm for the weekend without needing a passport...
