Athlon64 3700+ VS Pentium 4 3.2GHz

I'm updating my PC soon and while i've always been an Intel user myself some people have told me to look into AMD for a change.
I've found 2 processors for roughly the same price and i'm wondering which of these is the better choice for a gamer.

-AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2GHz Socket 939, 1MB

or

-Intel Pentium 4 640 3.2GHz Socket LGA775, 2MB, EM64T

If you're into gaming, any pc enthusiast site will tell you the same thing, the AMD processor is by far the best choice. The performance differences are real and noticable.
 
Thank you, it's pretty hard to find good information on the differences of these two CPU's so i thought asking here would be best...from what i've read in other posts most gamers seem to prefer AMD over Intel so i guess that solves this problem...now to find out what graphix card i'm going to use....thanks again!

depends r u going for an SLI mobo?
 
I don't know yet, so far the only mobo i can find at my shop that uses DDR2 does have SLI and i think DDR2 is better right? On the other hand i was looking at two different graphics cards in my price range and they're both ATI so no use for SLI....not sure yet though, have a post in the graphics cards section about those two cards, maybe someone will reply with an Nvidia alternative and maybe even SLI but i don't think i can get a nice SLI solution for the price of an X850pro.

DDR2 is supposed to be faster, yes, but no AMD mobos, processors, etc. support DDR2 until socket M2 is out. However, AMD is still better for gaming even with normal DDR RAM.

Graphics card, I'd probably spend more money and get a Nvidia 7800 GT. But that card you've got is good, I suppose.

DDR1 vs DDR2.. they are not the same thing.. not the same timing, not the same way of working. What matter with memory is: Is it fast enough to keep the CPU busy. In the case of AMD, DDR1 is plenty fast for them. And ddr2 will likely be plenty fast too.

DDR2 uses less voltage to work. That's an advantage. But for speed .. both do the job that they are supposed to.

AMD won't be better with DDR2. It will simply use what will now be mainstream. Just like SATA did not improve anything at first from PATA. But they are now mainstream and perform better. Not that much thou.. Still old IDE technology.

I like to play games but not a hardcore gamer. So should i go with AMD x2 4400 or get a P4? I would like to use for business related stuff and eventually get into editing like various short films and what not and encoding. So is AMD good for that? :?: God so hard to what to choose from. I mean I feel like waiting for intels' Conroe or amds m2 socket. So what do you guys think??? help a asian dude out lol.

If you read the mother of all cpu chart here, then you see AMD is a clear winner is most categories especially in the gaming end.

Now if you want a single or dual core that has high OC, cache, and quality, then go with Opteron (939 pin). The dual core version has higher OC and lower voltage/ heat release unlike the less expensive X2 cousin.

BTW, I have a 3700+ and it works great.

u can try the asus a8r crossfire edition,so both the ATI cards would work and i heard that the crossfire mobo kicks arse...and BTW...AMD doesnt use DDR2 as of now,they will be using 6 months down the line and that too only for the socket 940 so i guess u can stick to an AMD,why dont ya check the opterons?heard that their prices have come down.when OCed they work as good as a FX57!!!

check out the opteron core which have become cheaper now,when OCed they can kick the arse off the FX57
 
thanx for all the replies. I'm definitely going for AMD and i've also heard that Opterons are good so i'm ordering one of those. Again thank you for all the replies, i know questions like AMD or Intel pop up pretty often and you must be getting sick of em =)
 
Well, make sure you have a good PSU and motherboard for the Opty.
My recommendations for PSU's, Thermaltake, Zippy, PC&P, Antec...
Mobo, DFI Lanparty series (I bought an Ultra-D, I"m very impressed)
Then again, Epox is coming up with some very solid boards too boot.

Look for a CAYBE 0542... 146 or 148...both have the best chance of hitting 3GHZ.
 
no idea what you mean with half of that, CAYBE?? motherboard i was thinking asus myself, but not certain. Opteron 165 should do nicely i think. PSU i think i have an adequate one.

I read that OCing can damage the CPU. How often does this happen? I nevered OCed a comp so I wouldnt know.

Almost never with OCs less than 20%.
You really have to want to push the limits to damage one of the newer chips.So keep it under 20% and it should run fine??? :twisted:
 
Nova, CABYE refers to the CPU stepping...I dont have a helluva lot of time to explain it, so google that one.

Seriously try for a 939 Opty, 146 or 148, their easily the next 2500M
