ATI 4850 GPU Overheating......Again.

Hi,

Well about a month ago I was having some major issues with my GPU overheating and my system shutting down. I was able to fix it with a can of air by blowing all the dust out of the card and the computer, and applying some Artic silver 5 to the GPU as well. That caused my 80c Idle and 120+ full load to drop to 60c idle and around 80c full load.

Now though I noticed last night that I am again having some issues. It stay at a nice 60c idle temp, but when I run a stability test on Furmark, my GPU hits in the 110 - 115c mark. It doesn't shut my computer down, but it does get a lot hotter than it should. This is with the side of the case being off as well.

Ive had this card for around 6-8 months, so my questions are.
1. Am I not just getting enough air flow to keep it cool? (Although my CPU stays at a normal temp all the time)

2. Is there something wrong with my card and I need to send it off to get a new one, or get this one fixed?

3. Did me taking off my cards Fan / Heat sync to put some Artic Silver 5 on it void my warranty?

2. I have quiet a few fans circulating air though the case, but I do keep my house pretty hot during the summers as to save electricity on my heating / cooling bill. Could me keeping my house pretty hot have anything to do with it?

If you've reapplied the heatsink/fan to the GPU with better thermal paste AND have a well ventilated case with multiple fans, it sounds like an issue with the card specifically. A hot house can have an effect on it, but not that big of an effect. In your case, a 4850 should not be getting nearly that hot. See if you can get a refund/replacement.

I have the same problem with my video cards they overheat, i have 2 ati 4850 in crossfire but they go up as 90c in idle and to 115 - 120c in full load. I had just bought a new ventilated case ( lian-li armouirsuit p80 ), with what i thought i will fix my probs, my old case (antec sonataIII plus ) had the same probs, i think the ventilation of the video cards is underdimensioned.

I don't know what should i do, i was thincking of buing new ventilation for the video cards but that would make probably lose the waranty.

Any ideas ?

In most cases yes. Taking off the fan and heatsink will invalidate your warranty. You might want to just check with the manufacturer though. Oooops! You should have waited for the response first and then sent the card back for an inspection as it sounds like the card is faulty.

Just buy a new graphic card. I recommend something like 4870x2, GTX295.

the 4850 must have an overheating problem. I have mine in a well ventilated Antec 900 and after playing WoW for about an hour, my GPU would stop responding, WoW would quit and exit back to the desktop, and the computer would almost instantly recover. I could not figure this out for the longest time. Ruled out viruses, outdated drivers, bad hdd, bad RAM. I then installed a fan in the optional bracket supplied by Antec with my case. This locates a 120mm fan directly in front of the video card (literally an inch way from the card). After installing that fan, I never ran into this overheating issue again.

You can try sending the card back, although I feel you'll experience this with many 4850s. I would definitely upgrade your GPU cooler. Your case, even if it is a well circulating case, is just not good enough for lack of better words. If you could somehow get a fan directly in front of or on the side of the card, blowing right onto the card, that would probably fix your problem. If you cant get a fan directly blowing on that card (and i'm talking like an inch or two from the GPU) then I would upgrade your cooler.

Just noticed this got brought back up and wanted to let yall know what has happened with the card...

Well I tired quiet a few things but ended up having to RMA the car after talking to a tech at ASUS. I then got the card back, set it up and realized it was still running over 90c when playing games. I called a tech again from ASUS and he told me I needed to RMA the card again and wasn't sure why it passed all the tests last time I RMAed it.

I got it back a second time and it is still overheating after two RMAs. So I called ASUS tech again and they told me to do a few tests and concluded that there was something wrong with the card...... For the third time... So they want me to RMA it again.

That has been a week ago, but i haven't sent it in again yet due to me being pissed off and tired of dealing with there crap. But ill get it sent back in again sooner or later before my shipping label runs out.

i herd some bad things about asus and the 48XX cards, especially their cooling... i have 1 4850 that's a 1 slot cooler reference design and no problems for over half a year...

well, it seems you do have a faulty card, although I think all of the 4850s, or maybe even the 4800 cards in general have a problem with heat. mine is a sapphire 4850 that i am almost positive was overheating because my computer was constantly telling me it had "stopped responding" then recovered...but at the cost of exiting the game i had been playing.

Have you tried going into the Catalyst Control Center and increasing the fan speed (not sure if that was suggested)? I also have a 3870 and that thing runs fine...hope u get it firgured out man, keep us posted.

Ya, I have increased the speed on the card, but don't like to keep it to high cause its so noisy. Right now it sits around 60%. I thought about getting a aftermarket cooler, but not sure if im going to or not. If they don't fix it this next time I RMA it then ill probably buy a better cooler to put on it.

I had the same issue with my Sapphire 4850 hitting 105c under load. I ended up buying a Zalman VF1000 GPU Heatink. This considerably dropped my temps to 45c under load... i was blown away by the results. The stock heat sink is just bad, period. However, I just bought a 4890, and now my 4850 sits in the top of my closet lol. Still a great card though.

How much did your heat sink cost ya?

EDIT: Nvm I found it on newegg. Its gonna cost around 50 dollars once shipping is added in... Dang the fans to keep the cards at reasonable temps are half of what the card its self cost lol.

Yea, I paid 50 bucks as well. I actually have 2 of these Zalman heatsinks sitting in my closet lol. I had a 2nd 4850 in CF, and it failed after a few days (defective card). I got my refund on it, then just upgraded to a single 4890.

It is kind of pricey for it, but it does such a great job cooling your GPU.
