ATI 5770 BIOS Update Solves Overheating Problem...

Hello,
I have a Dell XPS with Windows 7 and an ATI 5770 Video Card. Under normal use, with minimal graphics demand, the card temperature was about 95 to 98 degrees F. When the graphics demand was high, the card failed each time the temperature reached 104 degrees.
Dell sent me a Video card BIOS update that cured the overheating problem. I ran a 3D 'Burn-In' test for four hours after updating the BIOS... The temperature remained at 113 degrees F throughout the test... Good news, no failure...

Just for curiosity, how high would the temperature be expected to rise..?

Most military and industrial equipment is rated to 55 degrees C (131 F)...

Our ATI card reached 113F during a 3D graphics burn-in-test... Normally, this computer is used for online interactive games like Asheron's Call and others...

Industrial strength caps are rated to 105c so 55c seems a bit on the low side to me.

105 C includes a generous safety factor...

Semiconductors are rated at lower temps...

But as caps intended for domestic use are rated at 80c I still think your idea of military spec is is a bit low.
