ATi 9700 PRO 128MB or BFG FX5700

I can get the fx at $219.00 from new egg with a lifetime warrenty or the ATI for 243.99. both with free shipping. Every bench mark I see the ATI smokes the FX but the ATI is an older model. I stopped buying ATI because of the Rage Furry. How are the drivers?
I have an A7N8X with XP2500+ @ 10.5* 200 2100mhz.
I am replacing a GF TI4200 that died.

Yah, I had an older ati too, left a nasty nasty bitter taste in my mouth, I'm finally getting over it to some degree. The ati drives have improved dramatically. The cat drivers are on par with nvidia's drivers (or in some cases better) now... an issue crops up now and again but they're pretty good about fixing them up fast.

By chance did you get your handle from the Black Company series of books?

Edit: I definetly recommend the ati.

Newer does not always equal better. That Ati "Older model" is still the cutting edge, and has FAR superior hardware compared to the 5700.

The 9700 supports DirectX 9, which is the standard now, and for a year or two more at least.

The 9800 (R350) is almost identical and has one or two very slight changes from the 9700 (R300)

In short, the 9700 still kicks ass. Especially the 5700's ass.

They seemed to get a bit tedious at the end, but the first book was astounding. Limper, Whisper, Raven, Soultaker, Oh My! Just read them about 6mo back, one of the better series I've read in the past few years.

I have read all of them. The first one is from the 80's I read them like 10 years ago now I just picked up the first book to re-read. You are the first person who ever asked me about this.

I read alot (to the tune of 8-10 fantasy/sci-fi books a week). You're the only other person I know that has read the books or even heard of them. I missed it in the 80s entirely, but saw it on a booklist on amazon that had alot other books I liked in it... figured I'd check it out, was pleasently surprised needless to say.

There are alot of really bad sci-fi/fantasy books out there. Lot of good ones too though, if you've never read it and you like sci-fi check out John Steakley's Armor. It starts kinda like starship troopers but is more of an action book and less of a political comentary (the book starship troopers by Hein* bears no resemblance to the movie other than a shared name and bugs.)
