Back in the day I was the unhappy owner of an ATI All-In-Wonder Pro 9800. Though performance wise I was pleased, I completely despised the driver support. Given my bad experience I avoided ATI/AMD like the plague and stuck with nVidia.

I am now at a crossroads given a new requirement I have. I need triple monitor support (maybe more), something I believe nVidia only offers in SLI configurations (which my mobo is incapable of). Am I wrong about that?

I am hesitant to jump ship to ATI/AMD. What has been your experience with their drivers vis-a-vis those from nVidia.

Please no fan-boy replies. I'd just like honest to goodness replies.

FWIW, I'm currently running a Core2Duo E8400, 4GB RAM, nVidia 9800GTX, Asus P5Q (P45 based board)

I am looking at either a 6870 or a 6950 based card

Thanks in advance!

Dealing with the drivers for their hd 5670, 5770, and 5830 haven't given me issues with gaming with the exception of battlefield bad company 2. The game would blue screen on my 5670 but this was quickly solved with a driver update. So from a gaming standpoint there has been no issues for me that were quickly solved.

I personally haven't had any real driver problems with any AMD card I have used, aside from occasional issues with their not so good OpenGL support. If you do want to Crossfire down the road, you probably will want to go with the 6950. The 6870 Crossfire seems to be plagued with microstuttering problems. 6870 in the single card configuration works just fine though, I've had no driver problems at all with my 6870.
