I upgraded from 4G (2x2G) to 8G (4x2G) of matching DDR2 pc6400. Once i booted up my graphics were all jacked up. The device manager shows issues with my 2 ATI HD3870 graphics cards. It said drivers turned off due to issues. Very generic statement. I took out 2 sticks and it was ok. I switched sticks and it was ok. I only have the issue with all 4 sticks of RAM.

Is there a problem with 64 bit using 4G and ATI cards. or my ATI cards specifically. I tried both ATI 8.12 Vista 64 bit drivers and ATI win 7 64 bit beta drivers.

any ideas

50mg. I have 2 x 3870 in my personal system listed in My Config. ATI Vista 64 Cat 8.12 driver will not install and function properly with Vista 64. I also have 8GBs of RAM. Around some forums, apparently people have gotten the 8.12 to load up using Vista 64 and 4 gigs and 2 x 3870 in Xfire. I can run my system fine with CAT 8.11. Try an earlier version and forget CAT 812. Hopefully AMD/ATI will address the issues and come out with a working driver for my setup with 9.1.

I entered a trouble ticket to AMD support and this is what I got.

From review, the issue appears to be related to the latest Catalyst 8.12 as reported. I had a suspicion it was the drivers. I tried all combos of RAM 2 sticks x 2G at a time and it worked. My mobo supports 8 gig, so thanks for confirming it.

I will try it tonight.

thanks for the help

Great. I'm using a 7900GTO with my Windows 7 BETA install. I plugged in my XP drive and now have a dual boot setup on an old AMD NF4 with a 4000+ San Diego single core. Look for ATI's 9.1 version next Wednesday, hopefully. They should fix the failure issue with the 3870 in crossfire with Vista 64 8 gigs. Should is the operative word. I'm using 8.11 in my main Vista 64 system with two 3870's.

I had about the same problem. I'm on an alienware m15x with vista 64bit. I use a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 with Driver 8.57. I tryed to upgrade to 8 gigs of ram but then the screen freezes and it says an error about the display driver. My motherboard supports 8gigs and im prety sure the problem is the driver. A main problem is that i cannot find an earlier version of my display driver anywhere. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks
